Post 951 Turbo Bolt-Ons

I was interested in what type of turbo's you can easily buy off eBay, but just as easily install them with the current stock turbo found in a 951. When people say bolt-on, is it truly that easy? Pull out a few screws, remove the old turbo, and replace it with the new one? I understand what the purpose of a turbo is, and the concept behind it, it's just the installation behind it. <img border="0" alt="[blabla]" title="" src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" />

What type of turbo would fit in perfectly? T04? Can someone name big turbos that can handle atleast 350-400hp without custom fabrications?

Also, is it smart to get to add a Tial Wastegate to the turbo installation? For example a 46mm. What type of spring is recommened? a .8?

I want to learn as much as possible, so people teach me.

ALWAYS buy a new turbo, or at least budget in another $350-400 if the turbo you buy needs work, or is used. A new turbo can be quite pricey (upto $2000), so guard your investment. As for recommends, there's a thread on the turbo board right now!, do a search on the board, and also check out a few of the vendors. Once you find the right threads, you'll also have the right names.

As for the wastegate, a stock 'gate can only hold so much. Generally though, it's not the type of wastegate, it's how you use it A Tial is a good name, no question, but think about control also. Some of those electronic controllers run upto $600...... but they are worth it. Again, try a search first!

I search, and search, but the information isn't what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for other types of turbos that can be used in the 951 except the ones that vend on this site.

I'm a type of person that usually looks for deals when it comes down to buying things for my car. I'm not going to spend $1-2k for a turbo that is said to be for a Porsche when I can go on ebay and by something similar to that for half the price. I just want to learn what type of turbos fit on these types of cars.

First of all I'm not a mechanic and I'm prepared to be corrected on this, but it's not your turbo that needs to handle high power, it just needs to be able to stand high air pressures. The simplest upgrade you can perform is to buy or modify your wastegate to allow higher boost pressures before cutting in. I would think that your turbo would be able to handle it, but would your pistons, bearings, seals and headgasket? I suspect not. More air pressure, means more air, but without modifying the DME to compensate with more fuel, the engine will run lean and you will evetually burn a hole in a piston.

I always think, if you want a faster car, just buy one.

to just buy a turbo and have it fit is not going to happen. take your old one off, send it to a turbonetics or similar and have them modify it. it will be new/rebuilt, bolt on due to using the existing kkk hot side (i believe), have garrett internals and will flow over 350rwhp depending on what options/trim you get. it will be about 700 dollars or around there. if you like to modify/custom build stuff then I guess spend 500 on ebay and good luck! (it has been done, but mostly for guys who want big turbos and want to lose the kkk hotside and go to all garrett.=$$$)

All the bolt on (and the fit is very tight) Turbo I have seen for the 951 use a rebuilt KKK hot side as Sam stated above so the exhaust plumbing doesn't have to be changed. At least, you would have to pull the motor to make a custom set of pipes for the hot side. Custom flanges and pipes get expensive.
