Question 944 Oil Pan

Will the oil pan on an 84 944 come off without taking off the steering rack and engine cross-member? There's not much clearance there.

I think there are some posts concerning this issue on the board. Try searching for them. I think (never done this myself) that the process involves raising the engine up to allow for extra clearance. I believe that you can jack it up from the bottum and then brace it from the top with a 2x4 (or something similar) across the fenders ... watch the paint though, remove the jack and you should have enough room to drop the pan.

Try searching the forums for oil pan gasket or something similar.

if you are looking to change the seal you'll need to drop the cross member, shouldn't be too tough if you got a cherry picker.

Might as well consider replacing the rod bearings while you have it all open (they're less expensive than the pan gasket). See the tech session on this at Paragon Products web site.

If you have over 100k on the clock and/or track the car, it's worth doing. Plus, it's all labor.

Keep the shiny side up,
