87 944S wont start, alarm horn wont stop.
OK. Went to start the 944S, it has sat with a dead battery for awhile.
I went today and got a new battery for it.
Slapped it in, went to start it and the alarm went off!
I disconnected the battery to stop the alarm as nothign else would do, including turning the key.
I reconnected the battery and the car fired right up.
I let it run for a few, and then shut it down to make sure it would start back up.
I tried to restart it and all it would do is crank over. Wouldnt catch.
I disconnected the battery to reset the DME, reconnected it and tried again to start it up only to have the alarm go off as soon as I plug the key in and turn it.
I tricked the alarm a couple times and got it to go off but now the engine only cranks, will not fire up.
I checked the fuses, all seem to be fine.
HELP!

Sounds like your alarm control unit might be the problem...might need to try to jumper the ACU to disable it. The alarm system does disable the ignition when the alarm is triggered.

ACU in late interior cars is in the passenger footwell. Pull the carpet back, unscrew that board that covers the DME frame. The ACU is clipped on the back side of the DME.
Here are the Clark's Garage instructions regarding the ACU and bypassing it:
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-23.htm
When this happened to me, there was frantic "clicking" (like a relay) coming from behind the DME. My ACU was toast. One thing you might be able to do is pull the alarm relay and the fuses for the horn and stuff as an interim thing.

Yes, you can leave it jumped to keep it disabled. Glad it worked for you!
You're luckier than I was - my S2 has the one year that had the 928 alarm p/n! Those bypass instructions don't work for my car.
