Post Timing Belt-- Now I'm ILL with this car

I'm finishing up on my timing belt, waterpump, balance belt, bad lifter, front seals, all rollers, & turbo waterpump job, button the puppy up, fire it up-- noise from inside the belt covers. Nothing seems to be rubbing, belt tensions are properly set per the blaszack and factory manual (I use the criket). All rollers are replaced. If it's belt whine, then it would be the loosest timing belt I've ever seen. The noise seems to emanate from the area of the cover between the waterpump and the balance shaft idler. It's not a whine but more like a loud hum. Anyone ever get a bad waterpump? Any other ideas welcome, I'm stumped at the moment.

1. Remove belt cover

2. Visual check, tension-recheck

If 1&2 ok

3. Start car, look and listen

4. Locate noise, make required repair.

5. Replace belt cover.

6. Go out and enjoy the twisties.

Cheers!!

Belt noises are the worst. I personally changed three waterpumps trying to isolate a bearing type noise. You all know how much fun it is is to change the waterpump on these cars. Is the noise constant or does it come and go? Only at idle or at all engine speeds?

It does sound like a bearing type of noise. I haven't tried to rev the engine at all since I'm really not sure what's making the noise. The waterpump is a rebuilt. Possible that it's bad from the getgo? With the stethoscope on the cover, the noise seems to come from that area.

And --- to reassemble, reverse steps above.

Looks like Murphy has struck again, wonder when he learned German?

Is it more than the "normal" belt whine?

Are you certain that your spacing is right on the "idler" pulley on the balance shaft belt?

That is a noise source.

Another is too-loose cam belt rubbing the plastic lip as it transitions from belt cover to dist. housing...

Also - you did roll the cam belt back 1.5 teeth from TDC before tensioning, right?

The first time I used the OptiBelt tool to do my belts, I got this adjustment all wrong. The car sounded a little weird and my intuition told me something was not right.

I went to Marcus’ site on the OptiBelt Tool and looked closely at the pictures and I determined that I misunderstood the adjustment of this idler pully. I readjusted it and all was fine.

If any one is using the Kricket or OptiBelt tool, please look at this site as the tensioning procedure is different than when using “The Tool”.

One mechanic I spoke to (Mark at Exotech)mentioned that you need to be careful in tensioning the balance belt. I guess you can tension it by rotating the tension pulley in the wrong direction which then puts it outside of its optimal position. I quick looked at mine after I spoke to him and it seemed OK, but I never took the time to fully understand his comment.

When my t-belt was new it had a pretty good whine to it when cold. Once the car warmed up the whine would subside. After 1000 miles I had the belt re-tensioned and now it never makes noise. Belt break in?????

Same as Brent, I had mine done by a race shop about 200 miles ago so I am pretty sure it was done properly. When I start it up on weekends, it WHINES/WHIRLS and sounds kinda like an P aircooled flat 6 but much louder. After about 8 minutes of driving, the sound goes away......

Okay since it sounds like a bearing noise, is it constant? Or does it come and go? If it is not constant...try bumping the idle just up to 1500 to 2000 rpm...does the sound go away? If the sound is not constant and goes away once you bump the idle....congrats! You have crud on the belt.

Bob S,

I would love to be able to tell you that the third balance shaft idler above the tensioner has a failed bearing.....or that the belt was overtensioned and is putting undue stress on the bearings.....or....or...or...but since it is a little hard to hear or see the motor here in California, I am unable to do this! I admit, I am not that good.

DAVE951M has chosen to work on his car, so DAVE951M must solve the problem. If anyone believes that they can simply open up an engine, post a question on a board and immediately fix a problem....They should concider taking their car to a local TRAINED mechanic.

My point is that there are basic principles to solving any mechanical problems. Keep it simple, use common sence, follow steps and eliminate the non-problem til the problem is solved.

Sorry for the shortness of my responce, but I am fresh off of a barn burning from one with a similar attitude.

"I can't do it....I want it fixed NOW!...fix it NOW!....WHY ARENT YOU FIXING IT!!!!"

Hey Bill,
Bob S. is not the guy with the question. Lighten up man. You have to admit your trite 6 step procedure really wasn't worth the bandwidth it took to post it. Dave asked a question because (I am assuming here) that he didn't know what else to try. He was soliciting info from people on this board because it is quite likely that someone here may have encountered his problem before. This would help point him in the right direction. His question was NOT stupid and Bob's reply was an attempt at humor with regard to your reply. Again, try to lighten up. We're all friends here.

Max
