Post 951 chip help - how can you tell it's chipped?

Hey guys,

I posted a few days back about that diamond blue '86 951 I was looking at. I mentioned that it felt pretty slow to me, at least compared to what I was expecting. To make it more confusing, it was supposedly chipped...but the factory boost gauge barely reaches 1.75 Bar, so it was running stock boost. The car was otherwise stock. I'm trying to figure out if it's really chipped or not.

Then someone mentioned, if it was chipped, it could be even slower than stock. My question (one of them anyway) is this...aren't there Stage 1 chips that are intended for stock boost levels?

I started digging through some of my old VW&Porsche magazines, and I found a 951 chip test in my Feb '90 issue. Here were the results according to the article:

Stock '86 951:
1/4 mile, 14.83 secs
40-85, 3rd gear - 7.99 secs
40-70, 3rd gear - 5.1 secs
5-60mph street start - 6.94 secs
Standard 0-60 - 7.2 secs

With Automotion chip kit installed (chips, wastegate shims, modified cycling valve):
1/4 mile, 13.97 secs
40-85, 3rd gear - 6.12 secs
40-70, 3rd gear - 3.96 secs
5-60mph street start - 5.57 secs
Standard 0-60 - 5.88 secs

Ok then...so, obviously, this kit must NOT operate at stock boost...am I right or wrong? Would *JUST* a chip make a noticeable difference in performance?

The car I test drove was NOT a 14-second-flat car. Under wide open throttle in first, it showed no signs of wanting to spin the tires, although I only started from 3k-4k rpm. Shifting into 2nd resulted in no chirping...although the suspension is modded and the tires are new so maybe I shouldn't judge by traction alone.

Any info is greatly appreciated. My idea to test for an aftermarket (Stage 1 I assume) chip, was to run the car to redline. Aren't aftermarket redlines usually around 6850 rpm?

What's the stock redline? Thanks guys!

Just a chip without increasing boost if anything will make the car slower, because it will be expecting extra boost and thus giving it extra fuel...when that fuel is unnecesary, thus making the car run rich.

The only sure way to tell if it is chipped is to open up the control unit and look. Autothority Stage 2 chips use a restrictor jet in the banjo bolt that feeds the cycling valve, this is easy to remove and check but will only tell you if it has an autothority chip. A chipped car should make more boost than that. My 89 951 with an autothority mass flow will break the back end loose as it comes on boost in second gear, esp. this time of year.(no help from the clutch). To check max boost drive the car in 3rd gear at about 4500 rpm, hold wot and drag brakes to keep rpm steady. drag brakes or find yourself doing 95 mph. Our local law enforcement frown on that. You cant tell max boost in 1 st gear, not enough load on the engine.

I could tell a big dif with my Autothority stage 2 chip...I could easily break loose the tires in 2nd gear without really even trying...

DOUGLAS...did you also raise the boost, or are the chips the ONLY thing changed on your car?

Also, can anyone post a picture of this "banjo bolt" so I know what to look for on this car I'm looking at???

The jet in the banjo bolt will be obvious...its a huge restriction in the banjo bolt...

I was just like you until I yanked the banjo bolt...and I was like OH...well duh!

My S2 breaks the tires all the way through first and halfway through second without the help of a Turbo and that is with new Kuhmo 712s 245/45/16s on the rear. This car you are looking at seems very questionable. It sounds like you are not afraid to get greasy so negotiate the price to leave you with enough to make repairs as you go along.

The banjo bolt is ocated in the inlet pipe that runs from the turbo to the intercooler, It has a bend in it and runs around the airbox. Just behind the box, near the support bracket at the back of the box there is a fitting with a small hose (approx 13 mm dia) the banjo bolt secures this fitting to the pipe

MHT, thanks much! I will probably have a closer look at the car this coming weekend. I will check to see what else appears to have been altered from stock.

One thing to remember is a lot of these responses come from people seeking comic relief over the internet. They used to do **** sites until they discovered the 951 gives them a stiffy..a reputable Porsche shop will tell you for free here in CA.

Good luck with the turbo boost bearing arm adjustment….

Thanks for the comic relief. I think.

I'm still not sure what to do since, at this point, it would cost a few thousand dollars to make a 951 as fast as my Corrado.

Speaking of ****, my Corrado butt raped a modified S4 last time I ran on a road course (Spring Mtn Motorsports Park, Pahrump, NV...2.2 mile circuit). How do you like your A6? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
