Question your opinions on these parts?

Tomorrow im ordering my new clutch parts but before i spend $1000 i wanted to know if anyone has used the same parts or can offer me better advice...

what i think im goingto order is part number 403-428 from tweeks its the "clutch masters performance clutch" stage 3 for $1025

i know the guy from 944s2.com said his new sachs clutch made transmission noises and vibrating, has any one had wierd experiences with the one in the tweeks catalog?

(im not too worried about price, around $1000 is fine, i just want something that will last through my hard driving and not make any embarrassing noises cruising around town)

From what I _think_ I understand, all of the spring centered clutches have the potential to make / transmit more noise & vibration. That's why the factory used the rubber-centered clutch originally. This seems to be because of the rigidity of the rear-transaxle torque-tube design... no u-joints or splines to interfere with transmitted vibration, and a lot of fast-spinning mass.

One thought to ponder... will you really drive hard enough _and_ keep the car long enough to wipe out a new rubber-centered clutch? Most (all?)of the failures on non-turbo cars that I recall hearing about have been after 60K or more miles.
Re Tweeks, you might want to shop some more... I haven't seen their catalog in seveal years, but they used to be kinda pricey.

Well I just replaced my clutch a few days ago. Have only driven it a short distance, as I have to get insurance. Tomorrow!.. any way's the first thing I noticed is that the rpm band in which to change gears without some clutch chatter is much narrower. This though is from someone that never drove one with a good clutch.. I lasted a year with a bad rubber clutch.. so I babied it. and it was pretty toasted when I removed it.. The engagment phase is the difference so far. THis is the stiffest least forgiving clutch I have ever driven... I will learn it. but have to say I can now see the reason for a rubber center.. it Makes it an every day person car.. Lazy shifter, so to say.. This is with like 10 miles so far. but I could tell the difference right off... 1st to second is all right.. but back down again is harder.. where I used to leave it in second at a slow speed is no more.. need to down shift... That is all I have so far... good luck

Wow. That sounds awfully expensive. You can get the Centerforce clutch disc and pressure plate for under $400, and a new factory disc and pressure plate aren't that much either. I would never buy anything from Tweeks.

FWIW, the rubber center disc has been superseded to a new spring center disc by Porsche. The list price is very, very high but you can buy it for about $205 from Sunset Porsche in Oregon since they sell at cost +15%.

I had the Sachs Sport spring disc installed and got a lot of transmission noise. I also had a lot of vibration and buzzing in the shifter... but the source of that was found to be a faulty unbalanced flywheel that Huntley Racing supplied (it was supposed to have been balanced). And of course Huntley doesn't stand by their products so I was forced to eat the whole cost of yanking it out and having it balanced to solve the problem. Don't do business with that company!

Anyway... if I were spending the money I'd opt for a genuine Porsche part because it's not fun or cheap doing it more than once.

Rubber center discs are still available from Sachs if you want one, but I like the smooth engagement of the spring center disc.

I PUT A PORSCHE SPRING CENTER CLUTH IN 3 MONTHS AGO I COULDNT TELL THE DIFFERECE.Except engagment seemed smoother as it grabbed, but the comparison to a 17 year old vs new.I have no vibrations and no additioal noises. I did replace the flywheel.1800 total with labor.

I did a lot of soul and forum searching before coming to the same conclusion as above,I will never punish my car enough to destroy my new rubber centre clutch,T he last one lasted at least the last 9yrs that the previous owner had it. The car now drives and changes beautifully.clutch kit cost me about 225uk pounds.hope this helps Steve. by the way if you go on sachs excellent website you will see they have superseded the rubber centre clutch three times , the last change being to spring type .They even have a picture!!

I saw over on i think 944Enhancement that he had 6-puck racing clutches for $200.

That sounds better than a "Stage3" performance clutch for 5x the price.

the 6-puck unit is supposedly a bit harsh on the street. But it is suitable for high HP applications.

He has a wide range of clutches, various pad materials, and seems to actually want to do business.
