the quaife wasnt used by the factory until the 92.5 or 93 968. the lsd on a 944 is a clutch type. good luck finding a quaife for a 944. i think paul guard of gt transmission makes a quaife/torsen for a 944, and think quaife over in england makes one too.

if i remember correctly what i read over the summer when i was researching a LSD for my S2 (and ended up with a 951S for this reason), the 968 differential wont fit our 944 boxes, but a G50 diff will fit a 968 box.

There's an article on Porschehybrids.com about this very thing.

I'll edit with a link when I find it, but it is possible to install one of these rear ends in a 944/951 trans., but a little machining needs to be done.

You can buy Audi V8 rear Torsen diff and lathe one bearing mounting 2mm's off so the Porsche diff bearing will fit and then it's a bolt-on to 924/944/951 gearbox. Did that on my S2 gearbox, absolutely no-brainer. V8 diff cost me 120eur.

Thanks for the comments. There exists a Quaife for 944 gearbox. I know I used to own one but sold it as was planning to get rid of my current car. Then the engine blew and rest is history.

Couple clarifications:My 'S3' ain't running 968 gearbox and no I won't put a 'stock' clutch-based LSD there because they need to be worked (friction plates wear) and still it's not a torSen.

Putting a 951S gearbox for S2 is not wise thing to do as the powerband of 951S is far different from S2.

Raceboy, PM sent..

from what ive read, and i am not an expert, a clutch type is better for the track than a torsen. thats one reason i opted for a 951S instead of a 968 to replace my non lsd S2

Yeah, but for street driving Torsen is better as it acts like an open diff in tight turns (not causing inner wheel to spin faster than it should) and as Jake pointed out, doesn't wear out.

I think this Guard unit is still for sale, and he's a trusted seller. I've dealt with him many times:

Tim runs spec 944. He's definitely reliable.

That said I'd rather have a Guard personally.

Hey may not be on Pelican much. You can also contact him on Nasaforums.com, under the user name "Tim Comeau"

I have his cell, but I don't feel comfortable giving it out without his consent.

Thanks, I'll PM him on Pelican.. but actually I'm after Quaife as I know how it performs on track....

Tom R. how can you say TorSen is worse on track compared to worn-out-std LSD? TorSen delimits the spin of the inner wheel in turn as it does not slow down the spinning wheel but transports the energy of that axle to the one that's not spinning. I've done some laps on 993 with a Quaife and I'll take it anyday that a regular LSD.
