Loose center cap on the wheel? That will cause a rattle.

just bumping my ideas It's worth a try, while you're in there..

So, I had a friend drive me around again to night with the seats down and my 6ft frame lying on the back with the carpet pulled back and my ear next to the wheel well.

The rattle was very obviously coming from the suspension. It's clear the space between the panels was transmitting the sound so it sounded like it was something in the passenger cab itself. Sounds, at times, like the small rear quater panel window was rattling.

Also, when I push hard on the driver side rear corner I can hear a faint clicking like noise that is not present on the passenger side.

The earlier suggestion of examining the trailing arm bolts is looking like it is on the money (to the mechanic that is ).

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Trailing arm bolts is a good bet. The hatch itself can make some weird noises when its not adjusted correctly. and a quick word on the Hatch, whenever you wash the car, lubricate the hinges, this is what makes them delaminate(and the sun of course!).

Keep us informed of your progress re the noise.
