951 vs. 968
I know I've mentioned this before, but today I had a conversation on Pelican that swayed me from choosing 968 to unsure again. So, I'll open the discussion once more.
If you had a choice: 951 or 968?
Points I've heard... are they valid?
951 is lighter
968 not built for performance like 951 is
968 has less HP (?!)
...
I'm so confused now. I like the 968 styling in the front and the fact that it has 6 gears (great for the highway), but if the 951 is more powerful.... what about a turbo on the 968? I still have several months, but I am trying to get options/ideas together.
Vent/Rant/Rave at your own will. Thanks.

Only a 944 Turbo S is faster in stock form than a 968. The 968 is faster than a regular stock 951 (but come on, how many of them are still stock these days?) The 951 is only a little bit lighter.
The 968 is built for as much performance as any other Porsche. But if you're going to want a lot of hp you should go with the 951 as it's a lot easier to upgrade for more power.

For reliability, get the 968. Its much newer, has a lot of improvements (safety too), six gears for highway cruising, by and large a more refined car all around. I think the 968s have around the same horses as a Turbo S, only in non-blown form.
Get the 951 for hauling *** on the weekend. You can get a 951 close to 280hp by simply swapping in a chip. Push 350hp with swapping parts is quite easy if you have the budget.
So if I only had one car and had to choose what it would be to get me everywhere I needed to go, I'd choose 968 in a heartbeat. If youve got a daily driver and want a weekend warrior, Id opt for the 951 and perform some upgrades.
I like the front end of the 968s too.
Ah what the hell, just get a 968 Turbo S.

Any one else have input?

968 CS: Lighter, sportier version with stock engine. 1923 produced.
968 Turbo S: Turbo version of the 968 CS, 305HP. 14 produced.
968 Turbo RS: Race version of the Turbo S. 4 Produced.
It is much easier to upgrade a already turbocharged 951 engine, than it is to turbocharge a 968 engine. But the 3.0L 16V Variocam engine from the 968 is a way better engine, so when turbocharged it will provide more power. It is just more expensive than upgrading a 951 engine that have all the "turbo bits" already in place.

I was looking for a 968 manual coupe for over a year. Eventually I 'settled' on a 951. I'm more than happy with the 951, but I'd still like a 968, since I prefer the body style.
I might just get a 964C2 next instead.
The 968 is harder to find, but if you have the extra money for one, it's well worth it.
It has no turbo lag, but can't be tweeked to the 300-400whp realm as easily/cheaply.

an interesting thing about the 968's 6 speed is that it won't provide the highway cruising you're looking for. the 968's 6th gear is geared lower than the 951's 5th. anotherwords, you'll be turning higher rpms in a 968 in top gear even though it's got an extra one!

Short of buying one of each, you'll need to decide what you want the car to do. For a car that will see daily use, I would definitely go 968. Altho 951's are quite capable of daily use as well, IMHO, the 968 is better at it. For a track car, either one will work well, as you get either low end torque with the 968 or brute force/higher hp potential out of the 951. For the ultimate street car with bragging rights, its hard to beat a 951 with the right mods.
In all honesty, you can't make a bad decision here.

A 951S is definetely faster than a stock 968 once you're rolling at WOT..
Anyway, test drive em both and decide...(something I never did, I was dumb)
I've still yet to drive a 968 actually.

interesting.
how about the final ratio?
So if doin' 60 mph with 951, I have like 2600 rpm,
what is it with 968?

AFAIK the six 968 ratios are equivalent to the five ratios of the S2.

Most people agree that the 968 seems to be screwed together better than the 951, as it was built by Porsche at Stuttgart, not at an Audi plant. Also, they were so expensive at the end that most buyers were more affluent, so the cars seem to have been taken care of better. Try to find a stock, lo mileage 951-they're not thick on the ground, right?
Also, you hardly ever see a 968 driving around, while the 951/944 style cars are quite common.
The big drawback is power. If you're an acceleration junkie, go 951. You just can't match a modded 951 with a 968.
For an everyday driver a 968 won't nickel and dime you to death, which can happen with a Turbo. You'll pay more to get into it, so take that into account.
Best of both worlds? A Turbo 968, which many have done. We had three at Hershey this year.

Damian, you pretty much have it summed the way I was thinking right before you added you post. Everyone was comparing 951 to 968 stock. What about to 968 with turbo. Seems that You'd have a daily driver with great HP potential. I really want to thank you all for your input. It's been very helpful and interesting. I learn something new everytime I log on.
One more question. I can't get my avatar to load. Right now it's sitting at a geocities.com file bank. Do I need to move it somewhere else, because each time I *do* get it to load, it never shows up in my posts.
Thanks guys!
