how reliable is welding a crankshaft

Yeah, no problems with welding or flame spraying.

Crank welding is done ALL the time here in Detroit. It is a common practice for increasing stroke. Taken to a reputable, competent welder, you should have NO concerns whatsoever, but you should find a specialist who does this type of work every day. There are two such specialist in Detroit, Performance Crankshaft and Crankshaft Craftsmen. If you can't find a local source, I'd be happy to provide contact information. I personally used A.W. Brown at Performance Crankshaft to develop a 2.0L stroker setup.

Yes, I did the same on MY gs-t too. I would rather have a crank repaired than to install another crank in my block... just go for it.
