Valentine 1

I have a V1 and LOVE it. (Cops are attracted to my Speed Yellow Boxster S like moths to a flame.)
LIKES: directional arrows tell you WHERE the cops are.....numerical counter tells you HOW MANY....logic filter does a good job a filtering out false signals....the thing has amazing range
DISLIKES: it's a bit bulky....takes up a lot of room on the dash. A remote install would be cool. You are still at risk to instant on Ka band radar, and laser. (There's just no defense to getting nailed by Ka.)
The V1 has saved my duff more than once. Get one; you will love it too!

I like mine. a lot.
I've also wired it into the roof with a line going under the top, down the passenger A pillar, and behind the glove box/stereo to a power line (ignition power, not battery.) the line is 100% invisible, and the whole detector sits above the rear view mirror nicely.
It works like a charm, stays out of the way, and turns off automatically when the car is off, I think it's a great setup.

I agree.
I love my V1 and it has saved my hine many a times.
I don't care for the size. It's way too big. Unless, the size accounts for the SUPERIOR early warning.
For a eight year old technology, you'd think they would have reduced the size or the price...go figure.
The truth is...any radar detector will help you. BUT it's YOU who needs to be alert and concentrate on your rear view or where the troopers may be hiding. If you drive fast, think fast as well.

i love my v1 and will be upgrading it to the latest version when I get the money. It payed for itself very quickly and that was before I had my porsche.
Ive thought about wiring it into the car but I dont know if I would take a chance on leaving it there. Ive had two radios stolen from a previous car.

I did a "hardwire" installation on my Audi S4, but because the wire plugs into the V1 with a phone jack plug it only takes a couple seconds to disconnect the V1 and slip it into the glove box when you leave the car. The power cord runs under the headliner, down the driver's side A pillar, and then into the fuse panel on the side of the dash where it plugs into a spare fuse box.
I'd like to do a similar wiring arrangement on my 951, but I haven't figured out yet where to tap the power from. Anybody who has done this have any recommendations?

Ive only had mine for a month, and its saved me a few times, including a LASER attack! I got enough "loose" laser rays to set off the detector about when he hit the car a few hundred yards ahead of me.....I scrubbed off about 10 mph and was ok.
I have not yet installed the hotwire connection, but am going to do so soon. Luckily my 750il street car is a bit more stealth (but equally fast) than the 951s! Ditto the earlier post that the phone connection makes unhooking the direct connect very easy

Yep when I get around to it I was thinking of having the wiring come up the pillar and out by the passenger visor and hook the valentine there with the remote display mounted at the top left side of the vents. Still unhooking and taking it out of the car with me though. Will be much better than that cord hanging down all the time.

I did the exact same thing, and I ended up running it down the A pillar, over the top of the glove box (pulled it out to install it), and down behind the stereo. The stereo has ignition power (usually the red wire on new stereos) so you don't have to worry about turning it off by hand.

Has anybody been pulled over with a radar detector in their car? I know they aren't illegal (at least in California) but I hear that cops don't take kindly to people who have them.

Installation in a Boxster and 911

Radar tests

LEGAL ISSUES:
The Department of Transportation bans the use of radar detectors in commercial trucks. Virginia and Washington DC ban the use of radar detectors in all vehicles.
The following states ban the use of radar and laser jammers: MN, OK, CA, NB, VA.

The only tests to ever imply that the V1 was not the best were all done by Craig Peterson of "radartest.com" He knocked the V1 when he worked for one of the automags as well. Supposedly he has a beef with Mike V b/c Mike refused to hire him as a consultant/tester of the detector (Craig is paid by the other companies). Car & Driver always show the V1 blowing away all the others. Maybe they are in bed with Mike V but who knows?
I have always loved my V1, but have also 2 cheap Whistlers on my daily drivers (at $400 a pop the V1's are the most expensive!). I always jack-in the V1 when I'm going to go on a haul out of town though.

I first got my Speed Yellow 986S in March 2000. On the day I picked up the car, I also got a cheap Wal-Mart special Cobra radar detector.
By June of that year, I had not one but two speeding tickets! Yeah...my driving was probably too fast.....but the Cobra was pretty much useless. In fact, the Cobra was worse than useless, because it lulled me into a false sense of security. (I swear, on the second ticket it did not even register ANY radar. I just looked into my rearview mirror and saw flashing lights!)
I immediately got a V1, and have had no problems since. More than once it has saved me. There's no such thing as 100% protection, but this is pretty close. It's expensive, but it will probably save you money over the long haul.
