OK i FINALLY got out there today
I tested the sensor and the 1 and 2 pins were connected. And the ground seems to be good.
What I did was take out the gear and sensor and tried to spin the gear with the car on (not running), and it showed no change on the speedometer. I don't know if it should have or not, but it didn't.

Then my dad and I jacked both rear wheels off the ground, left the pinion gear in there, and spun the wheels. Not only did the gear not turn but I couldn't feel any movement at all around the gear.

I ordered the drive gear from pelican, and was surprised to find it was also plastic. Is this hard to replace? I assume I would have to drop the entire transmission, and take it apart.

Also one more thing, sorry for the double post, but...
Is the speedo drive the same for late 944 as the 924S.

The trans. is a 87 924S. But I got the part number from the PET I have. 088409197
Maybe the one for the 97 924S is longer?

Here's to hopin'.....

Why does Paragon show a cable for a 87 924S?
http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...2.957.801c.htm

Did you put a 944 sensor on the 924S trany? How do you know it is compatible?

Because there is a threaded hole in the transmission where the sensor was on my old trans. And I was pretty sure that all these cars after 85 used the impulse sender at the trans.

Not 100%, but I don't know what else that hole would be for...

I don't know about the 924, just thinking. The hole is for a speedo, but you need to check that a 944 electronic pickup will work in a 924S trany that uses a cable. The output of the 944 is a pulse that changes with wheel speed. I would tap into the line and see if the pulses are being produced.

THis is from the link above that states the years that the speedo cable fits.

Fits 924 76-82; 924S 86-88; 944 83-85

Ok, so the guy who sold me the tranny said that the car DID have a drive cable that went to the front wheel.
So what is this hole for? And what should I do now?

87 924s still had the cable drive from the ds front wheel. Your trans prob. does not have the drive you need. Do a search awhile back there was a post about how to make this work w/ an early trans.

Thanks XS, I found this post where Special Tool answers the question.

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...986-944-a.html

About how long will this take to do?

Thanks.

If you have a lift, you should be able to do it in a couple of hours. DO you have access to another 944 trany that you can cannibalize the gear out of? If I were doing this, I would pull the gearout of the 944 box first.

I have a new gear in my garage that I got from pelican.
I assume the DS output shaft will come out when I remove the bolt in the center of it.
I don't know where the gear would go on the shaft though, because I only have an auto trans, since I swapped my auto for manual.

OH GOOD!
It looks like I'll be able to see the pinion when I remove the output shaft! Good deal!

I have the shop manual, so it looks like I should be able to handle myself from here.
Looks pretty self explanatory.

Ok,
Well the plot thickens.
I pulled the output shaft, put in the new drive gear, and closed it back up.
Stuck the pinion gear into the tranny and spun the wheel, and I could see the pinion spin.

Put it all back together and went for a quick drive. The speedometer seemed to climb erratically. It took a while to start moving, and then slowly climbed up to around 17mph. Then no matter how fast I went it didn't go up anymore. But it did fall back down when I decelerated.

So.... more confusion. Please help.

Also, I have a strange clunk (heavy clunk) coming from the rear drivers side. It doesn't seem like anything back there is loose, but I get a clunk when going over bumps. Maybe related, maybe not.
The sound was there before I pulled the output shaft.
Kind of sounds like the hatch bumping around at the hinges, but they're tight.

IDK....

Thanks for any ideas you can give. I don't at all mind checking every little thing.

Check that the sensor is pulsing with wheel rotation, the pulse rate should increase with wheel rate. Then, borrow a dash from someone and see if it works.
The bumping sounds like exhaust, maybe something is loose inside the muffler

Update on this for 100 years late.
The speedometer works now, all I had to do was install the gear onto the output shaft. When it was replaced the first time the pins on the gear got sheared off, which is why the speedometer would rise erratically.

Thanks for all the help.

Waiting on some E-Brake pads so I can finally get this car to inspection.
