Post Can anyone fix this block?

I am trying to settle with UPS for the damage to my block on its trip back from the machine shop. The damage is to the lower balance shaft casting on the block where the front and side covers meet at the front. I have pictures if I can figure out how to upload to this post. I could delete the balance shafts and use it, but this is a daily driver and I liked the smoothness of the factory design.

You might want to check back with the machine shop to see if they can help. I had some minor pitting on my 944 head (head gasket surface) and my machine shop welded up the pits and then milled the complete surface. Worked fine for me. I'm not sure if that can be done with the block, but again the gurus at the machine shop should be able to tell you if it's fixable. You might also want to have it checked for cracks in the same area that aren't visible.

That is minor, bring it to any welding shop and have them fix it...ask if they have a TIG welder...tell them to just weld it..bring it home...buy a good file....take your time and file it smooth.do not use any power tools of any kind on it.with a file it will be done in minutes.
I own a welding shop and have fixed hundreds of blocks.

Tinman:

Thanks for the reply. So you think my chances are good that it can be easily repaired and will not leak at that spot? The front housing will not fit in the bore on the end right now. Should I just use the die grinder or get it bored.

Guess you can tell that I am worried about it leaking.

You're in luck. That area is filled with AIR when properly assembled, and the only reason it gets sealed in the first place is to retain any oil that may possibly leak past the balance shaft bearing assembly. I think tinman's suggestion of filling the gap with weld, then hand-filing the surface smooth is the way to go.

Tell UPS that you can fix the damage, but that it will cost them appropriately. Have the welding shop do the work, then charge UPS for your time to hand-file the surface smooth. Remember, your time is shop time. $90/hr.

sorry for the delay.....I really think that the way it lookes in the picture I would file the opening so the cover fits and use a small amount of rtv to fill the gap. There is no presure there and if you get enough in the gap it will never leak.

Might want to use a hard setting gasket sealer or a good two part epoxy rather the RTV. With the epoxy, you could file it to shape after it sets.
