Default so what is everyone doing for catalytic converters?

My car should pass smog with a new cat. There is one for sale in a thread here, but if you can't find a used one, what have you done? The factory units are like $1600 and have to come from Germany, thats a no go.

I believe this is the one i bought.

I also picked up a straight section of tube from autozone and two couplers, cut the tube in half and welded it all together.

I'm in the same boat...want to do some mods but know that will wreck my 951's ability to pass TX emission inspection with no cat (right now it passes). Realistically, how much HP does a good cat rob?

I've got a 3" Speedline exhaust on mine w/ cat delete that the PO installed. I don't think there's any easy way to put it on...take it off...just for the inspection. If I'm going to put one on - I'd just assume leave it on there, I guess.

So, if someone were to go with something like that Stage II Vitesse but put a cat on - is that like cutting off your nose to spite your face or is a good cat (if there is such a thing) going to minimally impact performance?

Supposedly from what i've read, the 86 turbo was the first car to have the same amount of HP with and without a cat... so according to that it wouldn't rob any, but realistically probably 10 HP like on the NA, although a high flow like the $ 50 hi flow universal magnaflow one i bought would probably not rob much... I could feel a small difference in the butt dyno switching from stock to hi flow on my NA.

Why not attach it with exhaust clamps for the inspection then remove it after?

When my car was basically stock with autothority chips and two of the cats above in 2.5" form I passed with flying colors. 300ish in NO. Last week I scored 1222 out of 1225. Yikes.

+1 on installing a new Catco cat. I was being lazy -- I took the old system off, and cut off the old catalytic converter with a dremel (sawzaw would have been so much easier) and rather than welding (which would have been the right thing to do...), I used a "butt-joint" band clamps. To make sure I got a good seal, I used a cut-up beer can inside the band clamp (tip: drink beer first ).

I passed my smog with flying colors (0% on NOx!). And this was in California -- and in Berkeley, which is eco-**** central. They didn't even blink an eye at the 968 engine stuffed in a 944...

Cat technology has come a long ways since the 1980s, I guarantee if you install that catco you wont feel much or any power loss.

I'll be taking the exhaust system off the '89 S2 that I'm parting out this weekend if anyone wants an OEM unit with only 61K on it.
PM me.
