Tom, do yourself a favor, replace the tensioners at least, they are not all that expensive and if the cam belt tensioner fails you are back where you started from. Even if they only have 15k on them it is worth while to keep them in synch. with belt changes.

MHT,
New tensioner for $330 is on order. The total will be over 3k i am sure. parts are $1500, which includes one spring, and two bad valves at $50 each.
What i dont understand is if the head was warped how is the cam straight. shouldnt it have to be line bored?
the shop told me only the bottom of the head was warped.
it turns out it was a good thing i took it in because i didnt know one spring was bad, which is like having the granade sitting there with the pin next to it.

Hey Tom I hope you are not going to sell the car after all this! I see this so often in the buy/sell, people putting a **** load of money into their car getting them perfect and then they turn around and SELL IT!! WHY?!?! Keep it now that its bin rebuilt.

Aside from the timing belt issues typical of all 944 engines and the 16V engine cam chain tensioner, IMHO the S2 has the most reliable 944 engine.
My '83 has 202K miles, has been properly maintained and runs nicely, but its engine simply pales in comparison to the 3.0 liter DOHC in the S2.
Keep in mind also that the S2 came near the end of 944 production and the build quality improved dramatically (along with MSRP), so lots of the issues I've had to fix in the '83 have been nonexistent in the S2, e.g. waterpump update, motor mounts, etc.

Well said Luis.

Are you in the Long Beach Island Park area?
I am in atlantic beach. i just autocross it and use it as a station car since becoming a family man.
S2nut,
If i sell it, it will be on my terms. the lumbar seats are in transit, the car is being put back together, the paint is in amazing shape, i have snow tires on super clean 968 rims, and i dont have a use for a convertible until the baby is at least 2, which is two years from now.
i would want at least 15k to get rid of all the above. havent done the math yet. i dont think there are takers, so i will just have to settle and use it. oh poor me!

Tom,
Are you going to replace the thermostat while you have the engine open? You haven't mentioned it and it's another one of those "since the top is off and you are there" things. Besides it's a pretty inexpensive part in the scheme of things.

After 2 years, its down to around 3500. With 49K that I've put on it, thats 1500 plus the DME relay, axle, oil seperator seals, oil cooler seals, timing belt job, and voltage regulator, which comes out to be just under 1200 bucks. Thats a total of 2700 over 49,000 miles... 5.5 cents a mile whoa... hah.
It'd be worth more if that butt hadn't backed into it.

Thermostat was in original list, belt tensioner is going to be checked.
Now get this,
The mechanic calls me and says he is working on the bottom half today. the oil pan is out, and he is ready to change the rod bearings. since he will have the rod off, it is easy to change the rings. do i want to do the rings.
ONLY $140 per cylinder, and about two hours labor. So for another 700-750 I will have new rings. i guess the only thing left is the main bearings.
he said the cylinder walls were very clean.
Now I am at about $4,000 on stuff a PPI would not have found. Remember, when I bought the car, the factory markings were on the halfshafts. that's how clean this car was! I still have the touch up in cellophane in the glove compartment, and the latex gloves in the hatch. the spare has never been on the ground. Im not sure if i have the toolkit or airpump though.
Mobil 1 here i come!

Tom I feel your pain. I'm poring thousands of dollars into my first love (87 944 Turbo with close to 200k on the clock) that I originally paid $5400 for back in 99'. I don't even want to add up the repair bills or the new engine I just purchased because it really doesn't matter to me. I know I will get nothing but pure satisfaction and enjoyment out of this car after all the hard work and money I put into it!! Just keep your head up and things will work out!
