Chassis Swap an Introduction
Well it was decided tonight, Keith and I will be going through with the color swap, in other words we are swapping shells.
We will be documenting the whole process just to show you all what a great idea this is. Ok maybe it is not the best idea ever but i'm excited, and I think it will work out for the best.
More details to folow....

Ian and Keith,
All sounds like a great idea, but have you considered what happens to your resale values? Are you going to sign over titles to each other? Are the engines staying with the original cars? Anything else to consider?

Shouldn't affect resale values, we'll have to "sell" the cars to each other, engines stay with the original cars, and there are probably 100 other things to consider!
Naw, it shouldn't be a big deal, aside from sweat and elbow grease.
I think we can do it over 3 weekends!

Well due to the fact that I'm really bored here at work I figured I would break down the number of parts that are going to be swaped from one car to the other.
For the suspension it is going to be a complete swap. On the front it will be A-arms, hubs, spindles, tie rods, brakes, struts/coilovers. On the back we are just going to drop the full rear subframe down and just swap them between cars, this is nessasary because of the different torsion bars in the two cars.
That is step one, a lot of work but we are fairly sure we can knock that off in the first weekend.
Then we are going to want to go after the cosmetic things. We are going to be swapping seats, hatches, steering wheels, tail lights, head lights and anything else we can think of that needs to be moved.
This would leave us with a good portion done, but there is still one portion of the car that would need to be addressed. The engine compartment. We have simple things like the IC pipes, FPR's, but then we have the small matter of the turbo and the updated crosser over pipes, and full exhaust (test pipe/cat swap included). And then the MAP/AFM will round out the package.

This idea is absoulutely nuts. Changing parts for the color of the car. I wish I had thought of it!! I think we're going to need full pictures of everything! What other members of a messageboard would even attempt this? good luck!

Welcome to the darkside. Red on black is my favorite, even though it seems to get little admiration on this particular BBS.
What an interesting concept. It's not only a testament to your mechanical know-how, but also a testament to how good the body shells are on these cars that they are not even part of the concern equation (rust, etc....)
Good Luck!

tifo,
I was actually thinking of doing my car just like yours, I love the way the red fuchs came out, but I think I might just leave her on the black fuchs because I don't want to tread on your originality.
We will see....

If i've learned one thing about working on cars, its this. The proper formula for estimating is:
Logical guess + few hours for error X 6 (just because there is some crap that always breaks or you forgot your haynes manual, or a tool, or you took too long of a lunch or... maybe thats just me!)
Good luck. Lots of pictures!!!

Ian and Keith.
Good luck with the swap. I would make a couple of recomendatations to keep peace. Have a plan incase there are unexpected broken parts, Or missing bolts, etc. Like: If something breaks taking it off my current car, then I pay for the replacement. Something like that so that there are not hard feelings between you too. Up front communication goes a long way. Having it in writing will help even more. Don't assume a handshake will save a friendship. I recommend that even with family members. (especially with ...)
All that said. I have done such a swap with my 1st car that was wrecked and a donor shell that I bought. Both were red 86 turbos. I had the luxury of another 86 turbo to run in the meantime. Here's what I remember about the dissasembly. I had 2 weeks to get it out of the garage so my 3 86's didn't hog the garage space for my wifes new Galant. It took me 4 weekends to strip the car clean. No bolts left on the car. (I had a completly rust free wreck to work with, NO frozen bolts). Since you guys are not going that far, I would suspect only 2 weeks per car to remove everthing.
OH, Make sure you are organized. Put every bolt or set of bolts into a baggie and lable it clearly. Then keep the two cars bolts separate.
Assembly, It took me about 1.5 years. Ok, I wasn't in a hurry, and I had a house to remodel. I have completely swapped the drivetrain, interior, dash, seats, doors, carpeting, brakes, suspension.
It's running now, but I still have some wiring in the door to swap the electric door locks, AC work, and to finish the stereo install.
I would recommend detail oriented. I just thought of something. You could/should mark with paint or something everything that gets moved.
I would prepare for a 2-3 month downtime. I'm pretty sure it won't take that long, but in case it does you don't want hurt feelings with each other or the spouseal units.
Lastly, I still have a boatload of parts left over. Let me know if you need something.

Nah, blood and sweat maybe (ok if I drop something on me there may be tears too, but thats different).
We are not doing anything that complicated, and the cars are in similar condition overall, each has high and low spots. It is a lot of work, and we may eleminate a bit of that work by not swapping turbos, we will see.

Hahaha - this is GREAT.
THREE WEEKENDS, I tell you.
(maybe some night work in-between)
I may even change the engine wiring harness on one of the cars.
What Ian didn't mention is this: I plan to have both cars DRIVEABLE during the weeks between the swap weekends.
(That is, if both cars are driveable to begin with [hint, Ian..])

Keith,
I'm doing my best, I really need that one tube to get it working, hopefully tony get the pipes out to me on monday and we can get the ball rolling. I'm going to go through a see if I can come up with a replacement just to keep it running before then but we will see, i'm going to try and scrounge up the old broken pipe and duct tape it back together, but I'm not even sure I can find it.
Any news on the k27 options that we have? I really am open to suggestions on how to get you the turbo...
I am assuming you are going to be too busy to do anything this weekend (congrats again on the house), but if you do have time or need a hand moving just let me know.... (I do require payment for helping you move if you take me up on the offer, and that payment would be 1 cold beer...)
