Post Implications of mounting a tire backwards?

I have Yokohama AVS intermediates up front...relatively recent install..

While working under the car yesterday I noticed that the tire is mounted the wrong way. Meaning that the outside should be on the inside. It is the same for both front tires.

These tires are not directional, they just say "mount this side on the inside" and "mount this side on the outside".

SO, what are the implications of this?

I wanted to rotate my Mich MXX3's on the rims to even track tire wear, had the same quandry. I called Michelin's 800 line, got a tech guy in their racing department who gave me the green light. Best bet would be to call 'em and ask. Guy also gave me about 20+ minutes on the finer points of hot/cold inflation pressures for various track conditions.

I think the days of z-rated tires not being able to turn around are over, but it would be best to double check. Hope this helps.

Those tires are Asymmetrical, which means the inside of the tires tread is different from the outside. The manufacture designed it that way to get the best dry and wet traction from the tire. Some tires are actually noisier when they aren't mounted on the correct side because the tread blocks on the outside are designed to be quiet were as the insides are more aggressive which will be louder but it will be muffled when the noise is pushed under the car so you don't hear it.

I would take the tires back to the idiots that mounted them and tell them to fix it at there cost.

Or call Yokohama to see what they think. If you need there number I can get that for you tomorrow.

There is such a thing.

The tires don't have the typical V-shape tread pattern like directional tires but the tread is different from one side to the other so they aren't symmetrical like normal tires.

Okay then matter of semantics. Since the inside tread should be monted on the inside, and the outside tread mounted on the outside, even though they don't HAVE to be directional. They in fact are, if mounted properly.

However it would give you the added benefit of traveling very quickly in reverse if you wanted.

Since they aren't directional.

Wait no I'm wrong. Because they can be mounted either left or right. Which directional tires cannot.

Sorry.

Been a rough day.

Nothing to see here move along.

If you could get the number, that would be great. Visually it looks like its the same on the inner edges vs. the outer edges...but Yokohama knows best I'm sure.

thanks,

I have the same tires on my car and two of the tires were mounted incorrectly. I noticed it when washing the car seeing "this side facing inwards" on the outside of the tire. I took it back and he switched them around. now the 2 tires he fixed have a slow leak around the rubber/rim contact point. I am filling up my tires once a week. it sucks. make sure to tell him you dont want that to happen to your car.

Adrial, seriously, call the tire mfg., talk to their tech support people, and let them tell you how to proceed. They'll know what the real consequences or reverse mounting are, and of turning the tires around after they've been run 'wrong.'

I know that conventional wisdom for years was that radials could only be rotated front to rear, not cross-rotated, without risking a broken tread belt. I think this has changed in the past few years, but don't know if that's due to proving the theory wrong, or due to differences in modern tires.

Jim, venturing out into the post-holiday retail madness today...
