Post Radar detectors (hidden install)

I'd like to look into radar detectors...which are illegal in my state.
So, I'd like to do a hidden install.

Valentine one offers nothing on their website, but could something be rigged up? I mean all thats required is removing the sensors and installing them front and rear and running the wiring...Someone's gotta do it??

thanks,
Adrial

They are?!? Used to be just VA and CT or MA, and I think they even gave up as they don't have the authority to outlaw them. Read up on the communications act of (IIRC) 1936. You can monitor any frequency you want, you just can't transmit on most frequencies without a liscense, and all a radar detector does is let you know when the frequencies used for radar are in use.

If you want your detector hidden, a K-40 is the only way to go. It is expensive as hell (as much as 10 tickets!) but gives 360 degree protection and all the sensors and anntenna mount behind the bodywork. There is even a simple LED kit that can be installed inside your instrument pod that eliminates any trace of the device.

You should also think about a lazer jammer as well. There used to be a model sold as part of a front licence plate frame. I had the guts removed and installed behind the Rt. front marker light of my '94 turbo 3.6.

With these two, I never got a ticket nor even pulled over in the 3 three years I had the car! Lots of close calls though!!!!

Lazer jammers are a joke and are usually sold with charms and a bottle of snake oil. Also very illegal if uncovered by law enforcement officers. It falls under the category of interfering with Police duties or words to that effect.

As far as detetors being illegal in NY, I think you better check your sources. There are only two places where they are currently illegal to use: Virginia and DC. That being said, there is currently a bill on the docket in the NY legislatino but I do not know the status.

My source of info:
<a href="http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/radar4.html#active" target="_blank">Radar Detector Laws</a>

and

<a href="http://www.nf2g.com/scannist/nys_laws.html#rdni" target="_blank">New York Laws</a>

[EDIT]
It seems that there is some confusion - some pages reporting that it is illegal, others reporting that it is not, and to further add confusion only scanners are illegal, not detectors. If you have better info (ie NY has started putting up road signs etc) please let me know!

FYI

The V1 would def not be hidden, you still need to mount the big unit inside your car, so when you get pulled over sure they won't see the lights of it flashing, but they will see it and won't belive you didn't have it on.

You can take the V1 apart and do some cusom wiring and make in invisible, but this is a lot of work, just buy a radar detector that was designed for it like the K-40.

K-40 gets the big thumbs down for price and function in my book...

I guess I'll look around and see if anyone does hidden V1 installs.

IMO, radar detectors aren't worth the $$. Being cautious on the road, and not pushing the limits of the law too far is your best bet. I haven't had a detector for about 12 years, and only got 1 speeding ticket (32 in a 25 zone down my street: freaking speed trap!!)

Arial: once you attend DE, you won't be as likely to speed on the public roads. All safety nets are removed on these roads...

Or, you can take my route: I have a red 944S2. Cops love red sports cars, since they stick out like a sore thumb!

So, paint your car red, and you won't be as tempted to speed!

Cincinnati Microwave makes two different concealed set-ups. You have to go to one of their dealers for the install. The SR-1 is a dectector unit only (laser/radar) and about $900. The SRW is around $1400 and is also a laser jammer. The laser detectors live in your grill near the license plate and there is one in the rear. Hit their website and you can check it out. Search with Escort or Passport Radar Detector.

i don't have time to look this up and check it, but i'm pretty sure that laser jammers are legal. the laws that ban radar jammers are FCC regulations that limit how much energy you can transmit at certain frequencies. thus "passive" jammers that re-transmit received radar energy with some added FM are a bit more legal.

since light isn't regulated by the FCC and speed laser uses an IR (just below visible spectrum) light, i can't see how it would be illegal to transmit some of that continuously. also those frequencies don't reflect well off metal... your effective cross section to an IR laser is signifigantly reduced if you cover your license plate with an IR filter (looks clear).

if you want to use a detector where they are illegal, get an "undetectable" one. they use some kind of non standard downconvertor so that cops with "detector detectors" that look for radiation of the detector's local oscillator out it's antenna won't see you.

The only problem is at $2000 for the install including the Valentine One, you gotta be a player!
