Post Wanted: Manual steering rack for an 85/1

I'm considering replacing the power steering rack on my 85/1 944 with a manual unit and was wondering if anyone has a used one in good condition they'd like to donate to the cause. ('Cause I can't stand the leaking power steering pressure hose!) I replaced the original pressure hose with a new one a year ago for about $180.00. (yeah I know, I'm a sucker!) The new hose started leaking a few weeks ago and I can't stomach dropping $180.00 on another hose.

Just use your power rack with no fluid. You can ditch all of the hoses/pump and it will work fine.

Is this true? I'm a little naive when it comes to power steering systems, but I was under the impression that the power rack needed the fluid in order to operate correctly.

Can someone verify this. Apparently some 944s were delivered with manual steering and p/s was an option. I have a '87 NA 944 prepared to ITS specs for SCCA racing. The p/s rack has been leaking and I would like to replace with a manual rack or run it without fluid as described in the above post. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Try Markus Blaszak at mblaszak@kos.net

Markus has converted the manual racks.

Do not remove all of the fluid and run it dry. Bad idea. I have been running mine for a few months with the fluid still in it, but the belt not connected to the p/s pully. The belt flew off and then the mount for the pump broke. Since then i have just been running it as is. It is a little hard at first but you will get used to it fast. I have autocrossed the car and its manners are just fine. The best idea is to remove the rack, drain it, then pack it with some sort of grease, this works well and many of my friend have done it with their own cars. Also, gprparts.com should have a new manual rack for $190.

I've been running mine 'dry' for about 8 months. I don't think it is really dry, but thr esidaul fluid is keeping things lubed. I plan on checking it periodically. I am assuming that all of the fluid has leaked from the system mentioned above or the steering effort would be huge. Also, I think the manual racks may have a lower ratio which helps to reduce effort.

When I was contemplating doing this, I posted a question and someone responded that had been doing it succesfully for some time.

I should add that I made some aliminum 'dummy' fitting to replace the hose ends so that junk does not get into the rack.

I tried one from an 80 924 into my 83 944 and the housing has different chassis mount points and the splined shaft for the steering column connection is the wrong length.
