That was a really nice looking engine compartment. I bet the rest of the car looked as good. My compliments on your exceptional workmanship and skills in putting together a car like that.

Well, we never determined what cause the fire as we just lost power and coasted to the side of the highway. A glow under the hood and we all got out and called 911. It started out quite slow and we were able to grab the laptop and the stand alone ECU. By the time the fire dept showed up, car was fully engulfed, flames were over 10 feet in the air. Car was completely burned and the insurance company refused to allow anything from the car to be removed and salvage due to liability of the damaged parts finding their way back onto the street. Once I was paid out, the car was immediately crushed. This car did not have nitrous as it was in the previous supercharger setup. It did have a secondary battery in the back that was most likely the cause of the explosion.

At this time I haven't decided if I will do another 944/951 as I still have another project in the works.

Callaway turbo kit was sold several years ago.

****. Did you have the headers or crossover wrapped? I have heard sometimes oil will seep into the braiding and will catch fire. Apparently this is rather common. Really sucks to not know the cause of it all.
Sad to see one less canadian 944/951 A moment of silence for this one.

Car batteries rarely explode in a fire. But cabin pressure and heat make large panes of safety glass let loose with a bang, and most people think it's an explosion.

Either way, sorry to hear it. That just sucks.

X-over pipes were wrapped, but the engine died before we saw the fire. The Sparco seats completely burned and melted.

I think you are right as I thought it was the rear battery since it completely burned along with the aluminum battery box that it was in. The Weldon Racing Fuel Pump controller remains are beside the battery.

Yeah..that battery doesn't look like it exploded. They explode because of hydrogen gas buildup from charging, which can often collect in unvented battery boxes. It takes some really special circumstances to build up an "LEL" (lower explosive level) of hydrogen from a charging battery. I'm not sure I've even seen a documented case study of it happening with charging from an alternator - that usually happen from rapid charging with large battery chargers capable of really getting things rocking.

That being said, I'm a building investigator. I'm not actually certified for vehicle investigations, and probably will never bother, as nobody really cares. The insurance companies don't even request reports from me on vehicle fires, unless they were suspected as being the cause of a building fire.
