Backlash in rear when on/gas off/gas-Need answers??
I get a bad backlash when on/gas-off/gas. Also, when I go over speed bumps in gear I get a backlash that seems to sway back and forth badly, but only when in gear. What's going on and how can I fix the problem?

Hmmm...
At first blush it sounds like a broken clutch disc. It can be deceptive, sounding like it is coming from the back, the slap is occuring at the input shaft, but it is due to play in the clutch disc. If you want we can arrange a time to look at it. I'll try to call you tomorrow.

I had the same problem as well as a bad sound at around 3,000 to 3,500 rpms. I thought the tranny was going south as that is from where the sound was emanating (or so I thought). It turned out to be the clutch disk.

I had a problem with slop in the drivetrain, it was some rubber supports for the rear suspension that were flattening out. Replacing them helped a lot. Some backlash is normal, but mine was gettting really bad in traffic when I had to speed up and slow down a lot.

Your car has a rubber hub in the middle of the clutch disk. This is meant to dampen the vibrations in the driveline. Over time, this rubber 'hockey puck' deteriorates and eventually disintegrates.
I suspect that is the cause of your driveline backlash. The symptoms you describe I have seen on several cars I was looking to buy, and the problems were verified at PPI's.
BTW: A new clutch runs about $1500 to $2000. I suggest that you replace it with the spring centered unit that the 944 Turbo's came with. It matches up perfectly, and you won't ever have to worry about the rubber hockey puck again.
Just my $0.42

Mike: fix your clutch, quick! The old "donut" rubber, and now the newer spring based clutch system, is designed to take some of the "bang" stress/torque stress off your ring and pinion gears - buried inside your transaxle. If you wait too long, you run a huge risk in damaging your ring and pinion...snap/bang/whirrr/grind = replaced transaxle AND clutch. Stop driving the car NOW until the clutch is replaced.
