Default oil recommendations for winter

What would be a good choice viscosity wise for a Jeep Cherokee that will be going to and staying in South Dakota for a couple years? Referencing the 944 owners manual it seems like a tough choice between 10w30 vs 5w30.. It is going to be a commuter, but will see lots of very short trips, it would hardly ever get up to operating temps very much, possibly once a week. I would assume I'd have to run different grades for winter vs. summer? I don't know the temp ranges for Ellsworth AFB. Sorry to post about a Cherokee on a Porsche board. Thanks for any input

It can be brutal here...I run 10w 40 in my 944 and i never have problems with starting. I'd say anything with a winter weight of 10 or below.

Check the Mobil1 website
Depending on your specs it shows 0W-30 to 10W 30 ...

very few 5 or 10w30's have the right specs for a 944 engine....You should run M1 0w40..factory approved and the right oil for all temps.

Thanks smlporsche for the website suggestion. El Commandante what are the season ranges? Do you run a different viscosity for summer months?

bgiere, its for a Cherokee.. I am really not too familiar with them, I've only owned and learned on the 944, I was thinking as long as it has the service rating of SL it would be fine.

Well, I used to run 20w50 in the summer, and 10w40 in the winter, but I have noticed very little oil pressure change between the two, so i just run 10w 40 all year round. as for the temp range.. I don't know about out west, but here out east this week the wind chill was -25, and that is probably close to the lowest you'll get, but it sucks!! Its Probably usually low teens to mid 20s. And for the summer, temps up to 110, but usually in the low 80s-low 90s average. Out west usually gets loads of snow though!

I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee which has the same 4.0L engine as the Cherokee and I keep 10w-40 in it all year with no issues.
Here in MA temps can be in the teens during winter, mostly in the low-mid 20's though (for cold days) and it starts fine, and that thing's got 122,000mi on the clock...pretty good for a jeep
