I have been lucky enough to be in Germany this week on a business trip. I'm staying in Mannheim which is a short drive to Heidelberg and about 120 km to Stuttgart. So today I blasted on down the A6 and A81 autobahn to visit the spiritual birthplace of our machines (I also passed through Neckarsulm, the 'biological' birthplace of many 944's). I managed to get a nice Audi A4 turbodiesel which has a satisfying amount of torque down low. Speeds of up to 200 km/hr were reached on a few sections with little traffic, otherwise mostly cruised at a pedestrian 160 km/hr (100 mph) for a good while. Although several areas did have speed limits, many drivers here seem to take them as only a suggestion... What a nice feeling it is to travel at these speeds without the normal paranioa...
I will post more photos but here are a few from the Porsche museum...

I'll post some more soon. The new museum was not yet open to the public but it looks finished. It appeared they were having an employees-only visiting day as there were some people going inside (and I was politely told that it wasn't open yet). The motor certainly appeared to be a flat 16. Unfortunately, the info card was missing.
