Yes. No assembly lines in the Porsche plant!
I work in a machine/manufacturing shop and we initial all pieces that we work on. I wonder if there is any "tagging" or graffiti from builders.

Thats so cool.... do you know if there are any number of people who worked on just our own personal car or was it just sent down a "line" where every person had their own job... if they were built by hand by say 10 people, i want to hunt them down and have them sign a piece of paper for me or something... that would be so cool!

Not a porsche but pretty cool nonetheless. A friend of mine got a Merc SL55 AMG last fall and it had the engine builders signature right on the top of the engine cover on a nice looking plaque. Pretty awesome.

Apparently Porsche engines used to have the initials of the guy who built it printed somewhere on the block. I don't know when this habit was dropped, or what the real reason for it was, but the story I heard was rather amusing:
Back in the old days there was a guy whose initials were A.H. (IIRC), and he was really meticulous when it came to building engines. So it turned out that his units produced up to 10% more power than the official figures were... of course this didn't really hurt anybody, until the rumor started spreading in Porsche Club UK circles and people started demanding A.H. built engines when they were ordering new cars...
Who knows, it might be true <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I think volvo still uses the team concept. The veh sits on a cradle. (The round holes under the A,B, and C Pillar posts.) Each team assembled a section or system, then passed it down to the next team. It's not super efficient, but it usually turns out good work.

To decode VINs, take a look at the following link:
<a href="http://www.weissach.net/WP0AB294XMN410197-History.html#Specification" target="_blank">http://www.weissach.net/WP0AB294XMN410197-History.html#Specification</a>
It show how I decoded my VIN and reference to where I got the information on how to do it.
As regards hand building 944 cars, the vast majority of the over 300,000 cars made were built on the Audi assembly line at Neckarsulm.
Only a few 944s and the 968's were built at the Porsche plant Stuttgart and even that was a pretty automated line in the early '90's.
Karl.

968's were built at Porsche/Stuttgart, not Audi/Neckarsulm, hence the availability of the 'Exclusiv' options that were not possible with earlier cars. All the goodies such as rootwood trim, supple leather, paint to sample, etc., were options on the 968 but were not available on 944's, 951's, etc. Of course the added expense priced the 968 way out of market, which led to its demise. The replacement Boxter cost much less to manufacture, dropping the base price by about $10,000 less than the 968.
