When I changed the chain and tensioner assembly on my 944S, I discovered that the car had previously suffered a pretty catastrophic failure. I found several broken off sprocket teeth in the oil pan, although the teeth on the installed cams were fine, and also quite distinct evidence of the chain impacting the underside of the cam cover. Although my car was running fine with no noises before I did the chain/tensioner swap, I did find that the oil "J" pipe for pressurising the tensioner was broken off! Both banjo fittings were still screwed to the head and tensioner but the pipe had fractured where it connects to the banjos. I never did the pipe but I didn't go to the lengths of pulling the oil pan. With a new pipe fitted, I gained about half a bar of oil pressure, obviously due to the fact that oil had been pumping unrestricted out of the fractured pipe connection.

cheers
Derek
