Post 944 in magazines

does anyone have older issues of car & driver, motortrend, automobile, road & track, etc. with any 944 info in it?

if so can you scan them? my car magazine collection only goes back to '98 or so

i think it would be sweet to read what they said about the 944 when she was new!

Check out the Brookland Books Gold Portfolio series. They basically compile all magazine articles about a certain model car into a single book.

Try doing a search here, I scanned some stuff in from Road & Track not too long ago. If you can't find it I'll post them again.

My friend tore out a page of some magazine that was from when the very first 944 came out. It's rather neat! If anyone wants a scanned copy email me...... porschechick944s@aol.com <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

I recently got given a book on magazine articles on all Porsches from 1982 to 1986, and I've read a few of the articles.

Most articles worshipped the 944. In one article it won the best handling car out of several others including the 911. They had comparisons against American cars, Ferraris, other Porsches and a couple of others like Aston, Jaguar and Maserati and each time the 944 was on top or right up there.

Overall the impression was that people loved the car in that period and could see the 911 growing old compared with it and the 928 and 944. And with all the people (including me) who still love the performance and handling over many of today's expensive sports cars, it's not surprising that in it's day it was a king.

If you really want, I will scan the relavent 944 articles for you and post it here.

Sam.

Yeah, I've been looking for some of these, too...I just remember Road and Track (I think) described the 944 as "the best handling car on the planet."

Ive always felt the 944/951 was the "upscale" Mini Cooper of the performance world. Low profile, tires at the corners, fender flares and a wide stance, 50/50, decent power (great in the turbos), not overly heavy like a Gen-2 Supra, and relatively affordable (the NAs were just slightly more expensive than the decked out Supras and ZX Turbos, the 951 a pricier upgrade but definitely Boxster-esque and within the reach of the middle class with a little saving). Comparing the '86 Supra to a 944/951 is like apples and oranges. The Porsches are much lighter and drive like a sports car driver who built a sports car. The Supra was much heavier, was more of a 928-ish GT cruiser, but had good power and in terms of amenties/fit and finish could not be topped (I miss those nice Recaros). Im one of the opinion that most cars arent better or worse, just different. I just like cars. Okay, except anything engineered inside the US. If we can build the baddest fighters and stealth bombers on the planet, why cant we perfect the automobile. I would like to see General Dynamics, Lockheed, or Rockwell enter the car business.

UDPride: that would certainly be interesting. I've worked for an aerospace company for four years, change is slow because thing's are low volume (the space suit has some old stuff in it but it works), require a bunch of testing and are just plain expensive. I think it would be good for the aerospace industry to try and build a car. We used to have an automotive branch that made some electronic components but thats it. Of course we'd have to use kevlar, carbon fiber, hermetically sealed connectors, control units that can live through an EMP pulse, pressurized cockpits...
