Post holy bucking bronco! ahh

well i dont know if this has anything to do with my high rpm -> clutch in -> car dies problem but today i started the car up and got this amazingly bad bucking problem.

during the first 20 minutes of driving whenever i would be at low rpm (around 2000-2500) in 2nd or 3rd the car would buck like nobodies business if i let the rpms drop to that range and then let it coast or tried to gas it.. if i kept it higher with the pedel it would be "fine". also, at idle, idle was rough, very rough, not good.

once i got to where i was going i shut it off and came back 10 minutes later and it was seemingly better, for the rest of the day, no bucking, but it did just die now from highrpm-> to clutch in but thats probably just my o2 sensor (which i just ordered!)

or are these two problems related? is my clutch slipping? help.

Sounds like wet ignition to me, especially since it was fine later (warm engine dried it out).

meaning.. too much fuel? running rich? hmm.. so what causes that? fpr? o2 sensor maybe?

edit: i dont think you meant that at all do you? you mean my spark plug wires are toast or somethin? what are these wet ignition sprays i see(like marine-guard or peak starting fluid)?

::clueless:: sorta

My guess is that you've got one cylinder not firing. Check to see that each cylinder is getting spark. If it's associated with wetness, I'd look at plug wires and distributor/rotor as the likely cause.

Good luck

one cylinder was not firing and then suddenly it started firing? wow.. that sounds bad.. wouldnt that have been WAY worse? and this was only happening when i let the engine hold revs on its own, with the pedal down it wouldnt buck, it would just buck when letting off the accelerator or trying to hold low revs... maybe spark plugs but then it was fine.. i guess ill just have to ask my mechanic to look at everything. I was hoping I could figure this one out.

Well, once I get the O2 sensor it'll be a start..

If it is spark wires (although they look okay, and i checked for a light-show at night and saw nothing) wheres a good place to get new ones? and what do people usually replace them with (because i see no one ever goes back to oem wires)?

Forget "starting fluid", unles you are looking to blow something up (long story <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> ). The weather in our region the day or two before your post was cold and damp enough to create problems such as condensation where it didn't belong or exagerate the effect of ignition wires that are on the way out. If this part of the problem has cleared itself up and doesn't return, don't sweat it. Besides, it sounds like you have other problems to track down, but if you haven't replaced the cap, rotor and wires in a while you might consider doing it now.

Cheap enough?

Replacing the cap and rotors isn't to bad, $35 or $40 bucks if I remember. But the wires will cost you more than I paid for the 80 Duster.

$170 new. See if someone on the board is willing to part with a decent set. I got a spare set for $40 and you better have more firepower than me if you want them.

woops, I guess new wires arent that cheap. I just wonder if I really need new wires.

If I do.. how are those Paragon-8mm? Definitely worth getting over the stock oem? $209 vs $160 (S wires are a bit more $). Is this a pretty easy procedure to do myself?

I use the paragons. Nice wires. Easy to do, you replace 1 wire at a time. Take an old one off, find the one from your new bundle that's the same length, install it. Take the next old one off, etc.

And yes, wires can go bad all at once... be they spark plug wires, phone wires, or the network cable that talks to a mission critical 150K database server. Ask me how I know....

It might be a bad TPS as well. I have similar symptoms, though not nearly as bad. I've changed the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires - the bucking still exists around 1600 - 2000 rpm's in 1st and 2nd gear.
