Default Rear Speaker Replacement in 944S2

What size would fit in the rear panels? I would like to get something bigger then 4X6s, without a lot of modification to the panel itself. I searched but nothing really came up...

Thanks,
Justin

Are you talking about next to the rear seats?

On the later cars and your S2 there should a metal 4"x6" adapter plate that removes and 6.5" speakers will bolt right up to the existing opening. This was for the upgraded 10-speaker option and that option had a deeper speaker grille than the OEone with holes punched in it. On the earlier cars the opening had to cut off with a saw for 6.5" like I had to. I've tried fitting a 6x9 and it's too big. A 6x8 might fit but you would need to make your own adaptor plate and cover. There is plenty of depth so it's not an issue like the front speakers. Be sure and place some Dynamat or equal behind the speaker on the inner fender and also the speaker mounting surface if you go with any larger speaker or amp. Here's some pics of the 6.5" rear plate and the grille that came on the 10-speaker option from Corys album.

I put 6 1/2 inch speakers in the back seat. There was a plate just like Steve said that is held with a couple of screws and I took that out and the new speakers fit perfect and there is plenty of room and depth because of the flared back fender.

Are you guys removing the inner panel and rear quarter window to get to the speakers? Or is there another way beyond removing the window?
TIA

Good, i should have that adapter then.

That's the only way I was told to get to the rear speaker is by removing the window

No, you don't have to remove the rear window, but you have to be really careful when pulling the vinyl off of the lip under the window seal (it tears quite easily). If I had known how easy it is to remove and reinstall the windows, I would have just removed them when getting at the speakers.

I did a full soundproofing of the cars interior walls and a rear seat delete project . I needed to drive the car in the mean time. Removing the panel vinyl from under the rubber trim took me all of 2 minutes with a plastic Bondo spatula and nothing was damaged. I was able to work on the car with the panels completely off and didn't have to worry about the quarter windows leaking from breaking the sealing agent like many people complain about. It's really easier to work on the speaker area this way IMO.

I have a 1991 944S2 Cab. I need to replace the rear speakers. Will the 6.5" speaker fit in the rear panel? Also how do you remove the real panel?
