OT: Jetta advice?
#46
Thanks, Dave. I guess the brackets I have are different as both ends have long slots and are of equal length. I rigged something up tonight and the rubber edge is right at the edge of the roof...I'll have to see if it works on the drive to work. I guess I was lucky as both Jettas have the trunk light from the factory.

Skip: Nice car, perfect
- weeklygrocerygetter
- getthekidsto&fromschool car
- takethefamilyout car
and you can veven hook-op a trailer for the track car. (Yes it will pull even uphill, will require huge shifting effort though)
Am used to VW/Audi's (had numerous of them over the time).
These cars can be very low cost on maintenance if you do things yourselves.
Front brake pads should last 70k mls
Front rotors 140 K mls
Rear brakes: forever
Clutch (depending on use) 75K mls
Front tires 37K mls
rear tires will dry out
Battery: 3 years
Exhaust: 5 years
Ignore the dealer imposed preventive maintenance sceme but look for yourselves and replace as required. The latter is NOT neccessarily when the dealer tells you to.
Installing things (like CD changers) in the trunk needs some care: the fuel tank is clamped direct to the floor.
Drilling holes there imediately result in some additional tank vents.
Replacement of the tank required the complete rear suspention to be removed.
Upgrades are easy & cheap: just road holding / handling. (it will go faster than speed limits to start with anyway)
To get rid of the oversteer:
- get the toughest double action front shocks you can find.
- chop off max half winding from the TOP of the front spring with an angle grinder (take care, dont touch the second winding)
- Use GTI shocks in the rear
- Install an bushing under the lower spring support to lift the car in the back
This can be machined from an 8000 lbs socket weld fitting for (IIRC) 1" pipe.
Front shock works require an sping compressor. Rears dont.
This will create an oversteer feeling in fast cornering, expensive sway bar mods are not realy required.
If you want different wheels: think about modifying the current steel ones: widen the rim with 1". Cost would be some US$ 10,00 per wheel
Did all this (and some more) on:
-'79 Scirocco GT
-'85 Golf S
-'89 Golf GL
-'92 Golf TDI
The mods on the wheels are illegal in the country I live in.
I managed not to volate the 11th commandmand: You shall not be cought.
Cars passed the annual tech-check without any problem.
