Are you saying I can epoxy my current roof in and sand the roof flat? If so, that sounds acceptable. I just don't like the big buldge in the headliner right at my forhead.
PS- can you e-mail me pictures of your roll bar install? tkelly@pdxmax.com

That's what I'M screaming... I think the slide back on top of the roof idea, as well as a "moonroof" (I've always thought the MOONROOF was the see-through one Skip, but I could be wrong) would be the best idea for several reasons. One, is that it could be very large if ti went back into the roof, and two, being that SR's (or MR's) that slide back INTO the roof, can only do so at the expense of headroom, OR, a higher roof alltogether, as it takes a thicker roof to allow one to slide back into it. The '86/'87 Integras, for example, had the pop-up or pull-out style like our cars do (only they weree moonroofs- glass), and that was one thing NOBODY liked. So, w/the '88/'89's (the last two years of the 1st Gen) they went to a fully electric, slide-back-into-the-roof-type moonroof. But, in order to keep from having to make the cars taller than the earlier two years, they had to remove some of the headroom to make it work- some people may have had a prob w/this, but at 5'9", I never did
Skip-
That really looks like an awesome moonroof (or if the glass one's are SUNROOF'S, then my apologies). I would LOVE to see a pic or two of it slid all the way back, if you can ever find one. Did it go back and over part of the hatch? I could see someone forgetting, and opening their hatch (if so) and breaking something- i'm willing to take my chances though. Too bad it won't work in my already SR equipped car. Where is the place that made it- is there a way to get in touch w/them? I would like to see if there's a way to make the stock one slide all the way back on TOP like that(?)- doubtful, but I'd like to know for sure...
Thanks,
Robby

I like my sunroof - when the darn thing works!
Right now I'm having trouble with the microswitch - anyone know how to remove the switch to replace it?
As for "moonroof vs. sunroof" - I'm with Robby, I always thought a moonroof was glass and a sunroof was metal/fiberglass/plastic (oh, heck - ya can't see through it!).
At any rate, I think I liked the pop up roof on the early 944's better than the electric version on my 951. Less hassles by far!

Yes, it goes over the roof toward the rear hatch. There are stops built into the track mechanism that prevent it from going too far - protecting boneheads like me from opening the hatch into the roof.
I can only speculate that the reason the factory did not provide a sliding roof was that it is_not possible to do so. The targa roof area is designed to provide maximum open area, but moreover to provide the necessary shape to allow maximum headroom. Any larger and it might as well be a targa roof (ala 914), any smaller and it would interfere with tall drivers (though we all know it still does to some extent, especially when helmeted). The over-the-top design such as mine would not work with such a large roof (while not interfering with the hatch, or simply creating enough lift to fly).
Honestly, I like the design of the factory roof - but am completely aghast at the choice of Porsche not providing a "see-through" version of it.

Hey ERAU944, did you just buy your 944? I sold my old 87 944 red, and it didn't have a sunroof. Maybe it was you? Anyway, now I have a 86 951 with a sunroof and its awsome. But the non sunroof 944 is really rare.

nope, i've had it for over 6 months, enjoyed every minute of driving it... i know its rare, just trying to find out how rare/desireable it is... i love the sunroofed cars too, but there's comfort knowing that it wont leak around a sunroof and/or the electric motor is going to break or the gears will strip. i know people dont have alot of problems with this, but i like to think i'm getting out easy. most of all i like not having to wax around that seal in the roof
happy driving

A few months ago I spotted an 86 with a saratoga top for sale at a used car lot. After some serious haggling with the salesmanI bought the car and swapped the roof with one of my other 944's.
Two weeks later I sold the car for more than I bought it for. <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
<img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
The top I got is perfect, good seals, no scratches, and doesn't lift at high speeds.
I got really lucky and I'm very happy with the top. BTW I'm one of those unknowing people that bought a saratoga off ebay to put on one of my other cars cause I thought they were impossble to get. Oh well.

i prefer having a sunroof, even if it leaks (it's the drains that are clogged and not the seals). i usually cover it if it's outside anyway.
out here in calif., even in sf, i LOVE taking my sunroof off and taking in the fresh air. the only way a sunroof is desirable is if it's track-only. but, whatever, it's all relative.
Go USA!
