I have rather soft tires on my car, in the morning there is always a shimmy anywhere from 50 to 70 mph, after driver for 10 min it goes away. I have yokohama avs's on 16" fuchs. Thats a great tip about the valve stem being properly aligned, probably 5% of the shops know about that.

I have the same problem at ~60-80 mph and will try just about anything to correct it. However, if the tires/wheels get a proper spin balance, why would the position of the valve stem matter when mounted? I.e., the valve stem is mounted when the combo is balanced, so it's weight should already be accounted for, yes?
As for alignment, my mechanic recommended this as a next step (~4 hours at $65/per), but I've called tire shops like Firestone and others who pretty consistently say they doubt it's the alignment. Not sure what to do.

I just got back from a dramatically improved ride after rotating my front wheels to align the valve stem with the "red dot" wheel stud! I still have a slight vibration, but the improvement is significant. If you haven't done this yet it's worth a try...

well 3 of my 4 wheels had the wheel lock on the stud closer to the valve stem (every wheel but the rear passenger).. so.. i just changed the 2 locks on the front wheels to one of the two studs that are opposite of the valve stem... and i even have some random 15g weights stuck on the wheels in different places.. you would think that they actually balance something.. but.. after moving the locks and going out for a spin @60-70 i didnt really notice any wheel shimmy anymore.. maybe because it was raining or.. i dont know.. but ill try again soon and see if this really solved it. amazing if it did

(not like i have a torque wrench) i guess keep turning till it feels tight? i think one or two of my wheel locks are on the wrong side and im getting a 65mph shimmy in the steering wheel</strong><hr></blockquote>

oh yea, also, when the car is jacked, the front wheels arent supposed to turn are they (with the hand brake applied).. because mine did? i dont get that.. doesnt the hand brake clamp the discs? err... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
