Mysterious light bulb under hood

Connections are always a potential source of problems, the bulb socket is exposed. Sometimes it is just the angle of the hood or that the hood needs to be moved around a little bit. I found on my 84 that the hood light could be quite tempremental ant I didn't think it worked for a long time until like magic it started coming on when it was supposed to. Patience helps, and at least it's not a critical function.

The switch is a vastly overcomplicated mercury tilting type (like you would use on a bomb). The UK register secretary has written a procedure to repair it here:

Yeah that was me breaking my windshield earlier this year. Pay close attention to the hood corner when replacing your hood shocks. If you can't seem to raise the hood enough due to contact, you can adjust the hood by loosened two screws on each side where the hood mounts to the hinges. Loosen, slide the hood forwared all the way, tighten, replace your hood shocks, then re-adjust the hood. Make sure you don't shut the hood with it adjusted all the way forward! If you did it could wind up stuck shut. You should be able to tell where the hood was adjusted, but it wouldn't hurt to scribe some marks.

SO THAT'S how that #%^$& little light works! I tried everything (I thought) to make it work. But never had the lights on at the same time.
Now...if someone can only tell me why the damned windshield squirters have electrical wires attached to them? I haven't managed to get them to work. Comments anyone?

Glad this question was asked. My 951 was missing the under-hood bulb when I bought it. I figured easy fix... buy a new bulb, but I never would have guessed that the headlights needed to be turned on!
Thanks

Actually, I wasn't aware the hood light was activated through a mercury switch. But y'know, they've been around a long time, I've seen them on tons of 60's and 70's vintage cars.
I consider the light useless anyway, mine works (after some fiddling) but that's only because I fiddle with the car to relax. That light is too small, and too poorly placed, to provide any help anyway...

'Ya gotta love it. I've had my '87 since '96 and never knew that light worked with the park lamps! Admittedly, I never really paid it much attention, but it's always nice to learn something new about the car I love.
Thanks for asking the question Pam, and Gosh I miss living in Hawaii!

As far as hood shocks go. They can be bought for about $10 a peice and $15 for the "lifetime warranty ones". THe bulb under does go on with parking lights (if working). you can also activate the parking lights by turning the turn signal up or down w/ car off. If you have the remote rear hatch(by hood release)and your hatch doesn't open ALL the way by itself, it will also need new rear hatch shocks

There are some who believe the rear lift shocks are to blame for the glass/hatch delaminating issue so many of us (including me) have. I think if mine were to go out again I'd just leave them that way.

actually the light only works with the park lights on or if the right hand signal is on, like if you are pulled over....that's what mine does anyway.
