Angry DAMN IT!! A/C & Alt belt.

DAMN IT!!! This morning I was driving to school and the "!" light came on and so did the voltmeter light. So, I pulled over, open the hood and took a peek. To my suprise, I found that the A/C and Alternator belt was gone!!! It looked like it was completely shreded. Now, I'm at school and just called mommy so she could help me.

Any insight on why this might have happened?

How old were the belts? Most likely, either A) one broke & took the other with it, or B) one of the belt tension turnbuckles came loose, that belt threw off, and the other was lonely, so it went along... 8-). But check to be sure that the alt., PS pump, and AC clutch turn freely & quietly by hand, and that the pulleys aren't warped or loose.

FWIW, I was actually able to find both belts for the 968 (same, I think) at a local big-box auto parts store. You'll need minimal tools (open end wrenches for the turnbuckles, socket & rachet for the lower pan bolts), and maybe some spray lube (WD-40, etc.) to clean off the threads on the turnbuckles. If you can get one front tire up on a curb, and are fairly skinny or long-armed, it can be done without ramps, but they'll help a lot. At school, maybe you can enlist an interesting young lass to "hold the light for me".... and don't forget the hand-cleaner & rags.

And the alt. - AC belt needs to be _tight_... otherwise it'll slip on the alternator pulley.

Jim, if she'll hold the light, ask her out... 8-)

Just remember the turnbuckle has left and right hand threads on it. I always forget which side is which so you may want to look at the threads before wrenching. Hate to ever tigheting the Jamb nut when you are trying to loosen!

It looks like mu mother is going to be able to help me "creap" home by giving me a recharge when I need it. The belts had less than 10K on them. I don't know what happened. I'll find it out this evening...

This os often caused by the rear bolt coming out of the AC compressor, the compressor then twists and throws the belt, check the compressor tabs are still present.

Just hope the mounting tabs haven't started to crack or broke off...then you'll need to weld or get a new compressor.

My belt went out last week. Turns out the alt. locked up and the belt shredded on the pulley.
Cost was $145 to rebuild the alt. and put it in myself. It was a PITA cause the alt. bolts were frozen. Hopefully, you won't have to go thruogh the same trouble.

Good Luck

The pullies are turning freely. However, I haven't been able to get under the car to take a look. This morning I'm going down to school (30 mi!!!) and try to get it fixed or at least home. I just replaced the tensioner bolt. Maby it came out? It was tight in there. My belts were tight. this really sucks!
