called CASIS, something like computer assisted shift indication system or some damn thing

like said before its just a basic fuel economy meter, it takes a general reading of engine speed and throttle position (well, if youre not either idling or WOT) and figures that you are cruising and tells you to upshift at a certain rpm to maximize fuel economy.

There is a whole section in the owner's manual on this. Its actually quite interesting especially for an 80's car

The arrow tells you you need to go faster. Or be a sissy and shift up. Your choice!

I actually like it. Who am I to argue; I drive with a varying level of logic, while the computer is based solely on logic. And I find when I actually obey it, I get better fuel economy, which is great these days. I wish my 968 had one, and a MPG gauge.

All the early cars had it and I think maybe some late ones, but I don't think turbos ever had it.

I have it on my 86... so depends on if you want to call it early or not. My suspension is early, but everything else is updated

Not sure on specifics, but my 85.5 has it.

Yeah I think it became an option after 85.5, my 87 S has it, but I rode in another 87 944 n/a that did not.

It was an attempt to get around CAFE standards in the 80's

If you put in a light telling people to shift (early), then govmt testers can hardly claim worse mpg and up your taxes.
