There is an 82, my boss owns one. It has a small shelf under the glove compartment. I don't know if the 83's had that or not. No matter how much you clean the car up, it always looks dirty. I can't figure it out. It's a lot like pigpen.

I think the real problem is that the president of Porsche at the time when the 944 was developed was Peter Schutz. Porsche hired Schutz from Cummings Diesel. Porsche wanted to bring American, to have American thought and marketing. The 944 was Peters'project. He took parts from other models and assembled the into the 944 body. Porsche also built the engine unlike the early 924's
I think when Schutz left Porsche, so did the 944. The Porsche family wanted a Porsche running the company and when that happened Porsche Cars got back to the basics. So one could say that the 944 is an American car built by a German manufacture.

As I'm thinking about this I remember a recent episode of Car Crazy (Speed Channel) where Barry Meguiar interviewed the president of Porsche North America. Overall a good interview, but I remember a comment about having an engine in the rear as being the "correct" location.
The guy also noted that Porsche differentiates itself from the competition because it's a pure sports car company, or something to that effect. He seemed a little uncomfortable when he said that, as if he suddenly remembered that they're now an SUV maker!

i caught that episode!!
i was so pissed by by that point, i wanted to throw my tv out the window. sports cars only with a new suv on the way. what a sell-out.
as for "proper" engine placement? everyone knows that it's driectly behind the driver, ahead of the rear axle, aka: the new carrera gt.

To everyone else at the stoplight, it's a Porsche. When I put my foot through the floorboard, it feels like a Porsche. It breaks or needs something every freaking week!!! And I've spent twice the money on it that its worth!!!Mine is a Porsche. No doubt...

i really don't think Porsche not putting the 944 under a CLASSIC section of their website doesn't quite mean that the company's official position is that it's not a real porsche...

Yes, Fred Schwab is kind of arrogant and 911 biased imho. But, Harm Lagaay(sp) is the lead designer at Porsche, his project was the 924. I think the ommission is a subtle hint. But then again I could be delusional. I think the biggest barrier to convincing Porsche to reintroduce a model like the 944 is Fred Schwab, he likes those 911 customers, I think I recall him dissing the boxster a little.

who cares who makes this wonderful car, I would love it just as much if it said Volvo on the badges. I thought you guys owned these cars and loved them for what they are and not because of anything else. I will admit that the Porsche name inspires many people to associate it with many other great automobiles produced by this mark but the 944 is one of those cars that made them famous and available to many, not to mention saved the company financially.

Hi, Guys,
Don't be so hard on the 911 guys. I asked a German friend of mine which they consider to be a Porsche on the Autobahn, and he smiled and said, "The 928 and the 944, no doubt! They hug the road on the Autobahn, unlike the 911's, which we built mostly for the Americans to show off in." He was dead serious, and owns a 928.
Anyway, I picked up a nice book on Porsche Thursday, and the 944 is figured plenty in the book. It's by Jacky Ickx. According to him, Porsche DESIGNED the Volkswagen, so the first car to bear his name was based on that experience! In his book, Jacky also said the 944 "It is much smoother than one might expect of a four-cylinder of such capacity, because of contra-rotating balance shafts which make it as smooth as a 'six.' It is a very fine grand tourer."

These are the people who'll buy a 911 strictly for its looks and for show...and yes its true, the 944 saved porshe from bankruptsy when it could not sell the 911s any more.
