Default Bent Wheels

Bought a set of forged P-car factory wheels from a fellow Rennlister. No complaints about the purchase as he reduced the cost because one of the wheels appeared to be slightly bent. What was surprising, when I took the wheels to Americas Best here in Atlanta to see if any were in fact bent, I found that all 4 were bent. I saw them on the machine myself and much to my surprise they were all bent to some extent.

The manager told me in their experience almost all used wheels that they check are bent. The larger the offset the more potential problems. I was amazed as the other three wheels passed the "roll test" and looked good on the balance machine but the truing machine pointed out the problems.

Hey Chad, no gripes with you, I was as surprised as anyone. Did the old roll test and since I had the wheels with me had them check them all. Turns out, according to what I saw the only real way to check the wheel is on the truing machine. They told me this is common as heck. Super great guys (located in the old Harrison shop on Rt 9).

Yeah I hate even buying used wheels as every set I have ever bought has been bent.

Hmmm...maybe I should take my new (see...used) track wheels to check these out as well.

Yeah pretty much all of the 944 aluminuim wheels are bent. They just get worn out from riding around on the road for so long. I got this brilliant idea that I would bend them back when I was a sophomore in high school. I put a jack inside the wheel, and two pieces of wood in between it to keep it from scratching and I started jacking it back to normal. It bent back and I was making some progress, and then disaster struck. The jack popped out and sent the wood flying. One caught me in the face (of course) and I went to the hospital for 6 stitches. I still have a scar on my forehead from that damn wheel. And its still bent btw.

live and learn.

Were they able to straighten them? I had some bent ones and I had the local guy in a mobile unit try them and he couldn't get them right.

Yes, perfectly while I watched. Secret is to take time, move in small increments and have the right equipment. Send me a pm and I will send you the contact info. The owner may know someone over your way as he bought and sold 4 additional machines to other shops.

No cast alloys ~ only forged.

Hey Chris...I am pretty sure those S2 wheels (D90's) are cast. Are you certain?

I had a cast Phone Dial fixed. What's the problem with cast wheels?

Are they calling for a lot of weight when they are being balanced?

My mistake, my South African sucks. I called him to confirm, can fix both depending on severity of the damage. The D90's got confused with Club Sports in our discussion.
