Unhappy OH NO!!!!! MY WORST FEARS ARE REALIZED

BAAAAAD NEWS GUYS!

I was at the local Porsche dealer to get that little plastic cup that holds the end of the shift lever and talked to the service guys about my woes. They gave me some specs, copy of the service manual and told me to measure. I did and nearly crapped in my pants.

Through the inspection hole you measure the distance from the front of the hole to the front of the throw out bearing arm/lever with clutch released. Wear limit is 34mm. Mine? 36mm. $hit!

So on the way home, I go back and talk to them and ask, "If the clutch is worn out, why doesn't it disengage and why can't I make it slip by going WOT and poping the clutch at say 30 MPH? I got various explainations I didn't quite understand, but one thing was clear: the thing has to be pulled apart to see what the deal is.

I need to measure again tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure the throwout bearing lever travels at least the minimum 15mm. So it is like the whole thing is shoved back. Probably one of these broken disk springs? (I have an 88 Turbo S with 39,000 miles on it, none of it track.)

If someone can 'esplain it to me, I'd appreciate it.

Ok, once it is apart and I can see what happened, what sort of replacement parts do I go with? I know I have to go with at least the Cup disk and get rid of those damn 6 inner springs. And what else should I replace, "since I am there". CV joints springs to mind in my depressed state of mind.

I think I am going to go

Uhh.. crap. Seems like I'm gonna be following in your footsteps within the next few years. However, I suspect it's the tranny mount, becuase I think it's loose and that contirubtes to the play in the shifter arm. (Which makes gears harder to grab when the Tube is under stress..) Maybe I'm on crack, I dunno.

But Hey, I'll help ya out a bit by ordering some of those fancy Lighting kits everyone is praising.

Howmuch do they go for? (website?)

A clutch job is no fun but, it's really not that bad just time consuming.

Rent a tranny jack much much easier with it.

Replace throw out bearing guide tube $14
new pressure plate bolts
new flywheel bolts
should resurface flywheel or buy a lightweight unit
You only have to disconnect the inside cv joint but a good cleaning and repacking can be done at this time

Rich, it is easy enough to narrow down your problem if you go and measure the throwout bearing arm through the sight hole. Just measure it at rest and when the clutch is depressed fully.

Wish I had know about this trick before today. Hope you don't have this problem, because if you do you better fix it sooner rather than later.

As far as the lighting kits go to Danno's site @ http://www.gururacing.net/ and click on "Lighting Upgrades". The pages are still under construction it looks like, I don't know what the deal is on $20 for the battery cable upgrade project stuck in the headlight section. I don't even have a price on that yet, but I can guarantee it will be way, way, way, way over $20.

Anyway, the full headlight kit is $349.50 which includes the pair of Cibies, (4) 100/90 H4s, adjustable voltage regulator, wiring harness, and the shipping and insurance.

David, what sort of place do I rent one of these tranny jacks from and how much should I be looking to pay by the week?

This would explain the increased travel that is still not enough to completely disengage the clutch.

I opened this tread thinking somebody you love was hurt or something... So you're gonna do a clutch job, like said above it isn't hard just takes a bit of time.
