You remove the old one.
Buy a blank key.
Install the blank key appropriately into the switchblade.
Wire electronics if necessary.
Go get new key cut.

Anyone know the part number/pic of these?
I've only got one original key right now and I need a back up.

Might not make the car go faster, but I have a habit of breaking keys at work... Luckily the steel 944 key has held up to the abuse so far but brass keys I've bent a lot of.
I'm thinking the switchblade style will help protect it some more.

The 993 unit will accept the 944 key blank directly. Not sure why you would want to carry the bulky unit around, but here you go: This is going the opposite way of the way you want to go.

The 993 style switchblade key is no were as pretty as the newer switchblade keys though.

Out of all the p-car keys I liked the Carrera GT best and recently changed my 911 key to this style. Not sure it would take a 944 key blank though.

From what I could find with some quick searching, the part of the key blank that snaps into that key looks to be identical to the 944 blanks (same markings and everything). But if you're bending up brass keys, I have a hard time understanding how a bulky plastic POS is going to get less beat up.

This falls more into the polishing rather than driving category for me. I'd rather be driving (says the guy who has spent the last 4 weekends sanding his car for paint).

Aren't these things bulky?

I don't even use the original key for my car and prefer the generic blank for everyday use. Since I don't own a purse I don't want a huge key sticking into my leg from my pocket...and of course I don't want all the women around me getting too excited from an even bigger bulge in my pants.

Yea I'm not liking that key I thought it would be smaller.

I've used some switch blade keys when I was in europe and they didn't seem that bad.. to each their own I guess.

I love this key, but it says "911" on it, and it's pricey. Other than that it's beautiful.

Plus people will ask you why you have a 911 key for your RX-7.

Default wrong type of key

The original poster was referring to a switchblade key, where the metal key blade retracts into the fob, making it rather small by comparison. Mercedes has these and they are very nice looking. They look like a German precision instrument.
