Post repainting, seeking words of wisdom

I generally stick to the mailing list, but thought I might run this one by you guys on the forum also:

I recently received an insuance settlement ($3K) for some relatively minor hail damage. I think I should be able to get a decent paint job for close to this amount if I remove and replace a bunch of the exterior bits and pieces myself. It has been suggested that I might investigate getting the dents removed with PDR before taking it to the paint people. Does this sound like a good idea? Any other tips/suggestions/questions greatly appreciated. By the way, I was planning on having my car repainted as soon as I had some cash (probably not 'till I get done with grad school), but my current situation might allow me to do this a little sooner, so I am willing to spend some additional money to have it done right.

Thanks!

If you really need new paint and need panels straightened in addition to hail dents, since your sprayer will need to do prep anyway, maybe you should find a good body shop. You should determine whether dent removal would really save you any money.

On the subject of dent removal, my experience with Dent Busters in Austin, Texas was excellent. The guy that did the job was amazing to watch. I used only about $800 of my $3K insurance settlement to repair light, but extensive hail damage on a pristine black BMW. If all you really need is dent repair and you can confirm that the tech is good, I recommend it highly.

Search for a thread called

"So you say you want to paint your car"

That'll give you part of my description.

Hy not do most of the prep work your self? Strip the car down and take them a roller to paint. I think that owuld cut down quite a bit on the cost.

Search for this exact topic name:

So you want to paint your car (with pictures)

Or, I've also bumped the thread for you. You can also search for topics by ELLSSUU and you will probably find a few threads about painting cars that I've touched base in.

PM me if you need any advice.
