Default Dreams of a 951 PDK

Has anyone else dreamed of replacing this:

with this:

7-speed LSD model, no paddles, just a sequential +/- shifter

you betcha.

from the first time i even heard of the PDK i wanted one.

maybe someday...

you can pick up a GT3 cup racing version, sequential 6-speed for like $14000 if you want lol

and my at least from this side that bellhousing looks similar..

the issue with that would be the PDK would need a flywheel to hook up to. and also for mounting in a 944 youd need to flip the differential

You do realize that its not another tiptronic? It actually shifts faster and smoother than a manual.

Nah, just wait, PDK will be in a Boxster soon enough.

couldnt care less... i dont see how it would make driving any more fun. That being said, no, i have never driven a car with a trans like that.

still it will need a flywheel or some sort of substitute. maybe you could adapt a flex plate or something.

my mom has an uber-quick Cooper S with sequential shifter, both paddles and on the floor. It's a hell of a car (and faster than my n/a), but shifting a five speed is a helluvalot more fun. I agree with jtsporsche.

I've driven a PDK 911 for a few laps. It is very nice. I'd rather have a true sequential like the cup cars though, just because it sounds better. The PDK was very smooth and quick though.

Porsche has been experimenting with dual clutch gearboxes since the 917. If you read back in Excellence from earlier this year, they mention the existence of a single 944 made with a dual clutch gearbox made way back when. I actually have been meaning to post a thread about it, as this car would be the holy grail of front engine watercoolers.

Now I need to find the mention and post it up.

This thing shifts faster than any manual ever can and behaves like a manual only better, it preselects the next gear. Also has launch control - real F1 stuff.

The manual box is dead, just like it is in F1, and you would be insane not to order this option with any new p-car.

Don't confuse this with Tipronic, nothing like it, a different animal altogether. It shifts like a sequential, so it goes through all the gears up and down, but very, very quickly. The gearbox won't change up a gear on the overrun if you come off the throttle abruptly, like when you are approaching a corner, it also quickens the downshift through the gears when you brake heavily and won't shift up a gear mid-corner when it senses the road speed and lateral accelaration are high (measured by a G-sensor).

MANUAL TRANSMISSION IS NOW OFFICIALLY DEAD!

Well laptimes may say a regular manual trans is dead I don't...

My dad bought a VW GLI with the DSG gearbox and while it's fun for a while, the novelty wears off very soon, at least for me. I wish it had a 6 speed manual. It is very, very smooth and shifts up fast but I wish it was a little faster blipping on the downshifts.

Love Audi's DSG, unfortunately I've also blown two of their transmissions up. (Neither was my car, both covered under warranty). Aparently they don't like the way i drive....

thank you, i dont hear that very often.

now these new flappy paddle gearboxes and what have you, are certainley better for "competition" uses no doubt, and someone mentioned launch control, also... pretty sweet.

but the only thing this stuff replaces is driving skill. LEARN TO REV MATCH!!! and your shifts will be smooth. my friend brags about how smooth the "semi-manual" trans in his '03 eclipse is. its not semi-manual, you have no clutch....its therefore an automatic.

Not the 917. The first car Porsche had was an old 956 in the 80's. It never really worked well except for short courses where they were able to finish before it blew up. It was also used in the car MPD47 has in his Avatar. It took a ton of development and stubbornness to get it to where it is now. Porsche took a long time to ensure they did it right for the public.

Personally, I really like the Performance of a 09 911S PDK with Sport Plus, however nothing will replace the fun of a good clutch and Stick Shift.
