Since my vanity plates with a German word should be coming any day now, I thought maybe I'd up the German ante on the car by putting an oval D sticker inside the hatch glass.

Does anyone know where you can get those? Also, what exactly is the point of them? I've seen similar stickers for France, Italy, UK, everywhere. Is it just kind of to show your support of that country, or to give a shout out to your Old Country, where ever that may be?

Speaking of vanity plates, I was thinking of getting: "SGTSHULZ", or Sgt. Shultz from Hogan's Heros, my car's nickname.

I really don't know the point of them, but they are ALL over in Europe. Maybe it's because you can drive from country to country over there (soon also the UK), so there is a pretty good mix all the time, and it might help, say, when the Polizi pull you over to know you don't even speak German...? Many Americans over there have an oval with "USA" in it. Don't know how smart that is now days with the rampant anti-American/terrorism (not that it was any better in the 70s and 80s).

Maybe a European friend would like to chime in.

Although not enforced, it is the law over here to have the country sticker on your car. Not so much so the police know what language you speak but so they know where to find you when you break the law. As for the USA stickers, unfortunately they too are mandatory for cars registered with military plates. Although I've been over here 15 years and I've never put any stickers on my car and never had a problem. Skwerk-if you really want to put a D sticker on your car let me know. I still know a lot of people in Germany who can get one for you.

These letters are internationally agreed ( I guess there's nowadays a web-page about this... )and for example

USA Well,you know...
CDN Your friends up north
D Germany (Deutschland)
F France
GB Great Britain
and so on...

Now all members of European Union ( You all surely know what that is... NO,it's not Soviet Union... <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" /> ) agreed to have identical (well,in general layout) licence plates and this letter indicating nationality is on these plates.
Just like you guys have your plates in the States,your homestate samped on them so that cops can find you when you fly away on interstate.... <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

Every country in the EU still has their/our own design of the number plates and also their own registration system.

I do believe that I have read somewhere that there is an intention to bring all European cars on to the same system but on major problem with that is that all countries have different road taxes. Another problem is that small insurance companies would have a hard time to survive if they have to insure cars all over the EU.

Anders, that sounds interesting ... b/c here in Finland we have this really crude license plate policy: it's two or three letters and one to three numbers, out of which the first one can't be zero. Ie. ABC-123 and so on...

Of course it works out fine, but you just can't really get a "fun" plate. A friend has TUR-80 on his trick 930 and that's about as creative as you can get

We also have the ABC123-plates here. But we can buy a vanity plate for 6000 SEK (about 650 USD) and have it for ten years.

IMHO Porsches should only have the stickers they come off the assembly line with on them. Although having said that if I could find one that said "HIGH TONED SON OF A BITCH" I'd put it on in place of the Porsche sticker in the back.

Also having the country letters on the registration plates is not mandatory yet. At least not here anyway. You can have them with the letters on here but it'll cost you more.

BTW-Jon what do you do out there in the CS? You're not part of the WSK are you?

Its state-by-state.

I remember hearing (or reading) about a Corvette that ran from the highway patrol and was a few miles from the state border when he wrecked. Had he made it across, he would have gotten away, because the state he was going to enter didn't have anyone stationed there, nor had he actually broken the law in that state (if he slowed down upon entering it).
