Post differences between '86 and '87 turbo engines?

i was just wondering if there are any major differences between the '86 and '87 turbo engines. i have an '87 turbo and recently got a replacement engine for it, but i now (after installing then entire thing) know that the engine is in fact a '86. i was just wondering what is different, besides the connections for the instruments and ABS.

thanks all!

Belt tensioner, mostly. I think the balance shafts underwent a revision. Oh - some of the 86's still have the old and terrible one-piece crossover pipe and the non-bellows 1-4 header.

hey thats great! i knew there was a reason that my wastegate would not bolt up to the crossover pipe. does the '86 tensioner cause any problems? am i going to run into any other problems with the electrical stuff such as chips on my '87 DME and KLR? i have had the car running already, but obviously it was a rough start as the engine was most likely sitting for a while.

'86 tensioner is just fine as long as the belt tension is checked correctly and routinely! Also - verify that the tensioner stud is not loose every once in an while - I've seen one snap - BAD.

Oh - the 86 harness should plug right in to your 87 DME/KLR.

The oil pan has an oil level sensor not in the 86 cars. I personally like the 86 tensioners better. The 87 and 88 turbo I have also has the one piece pain in the neck cross over pipe like my 86. I have never had to take apart my 89 turbo so I don't know if they come with stock 2 piece. Other than that, the timing belt front and rear covers are different to accomodate the tensioner and are not interchangeable. The block has drilled and tapped holes in the 87 for the auto tensioner the 86 does not have either.

I have an '86 951 and I am doing an engine swap to an '87 engine. Do I just leave the oil level sensor disconnected on the '87 turbo engine when I install it into my '86 car, or is there a way to utilize this?
