dumb question about S models
There is an 88 S coming up at one of the salvage sales I frequent, it has had an engine fire. what all is different between it and an regular 44. Might pick it up as parts car, I wish I knew if had an lsd. It's not a S2 I do know that much. Interior looks good from the pics 125k on the clock. I've always had 951 parts cars never an s

The S has a 16 valve head, rather than an 8 valve which the rest of the 944 series had (save the S2). Many engine components are different than the other 944 cars because of this (intake, exhaust, fuel delivery, pistons and a few more) Unfortunately used S engine parts are hard to come by, especially the head. As much as I'd love to see one saved it may cost you quite a bit to find the parts you'll need. But if you're up for the challenge the S can be a fun car just like any 944. Makes a little more power than an 8valve (188hp vs. 147-155ish?) But do have more moving parts to worry about.

5th gear IIRC is the most different than an NA...final drive ratio is still 9:35 though.
There was someone looking for a used head here that bent his valves from a broken cam chain...should be able to sell it!
If the price is right, I'd be interested as a spare or project head.

I'll probably try to scoop it up and Lart it out. It has a euro lower on the rear, otherwise stock. The particular sale that is at is rather small so it will probably go cheap.

The S head is worth more than a 968 head because it works for all those 951 guys looking to make 16v turbos.
The S suspension, brakes, and body are just like the standard 944.

My 944 had an engine fire, only took a couple hundred to fix it. The S on the other hand, if it caught on fire, I wouldn't be too happy. Btw, if you buy it, I'll put dibs on either the head, the cams, or both.

My 944 and I watched as my friend's Turbo was totaled from an engine fire a year ago....very sad. The fire was so bad it burnt the paint off the hood and warped it, melted the engine latch together (the firemen had to use an axe to chop the hood open, and burnt pretty much everything in the engine bay. You're lucky.
