[quote] The sad truth is there is not a great deal of power in 924S and 944 NA engines. You can do a fair number of little tricks though.
Port and polish, this is really easy, you just have to be careful.

Digital ignition system. Not too expensive, allows you to control ignition independantly of the Motronic ECU.

Franco Cam gear, allows you to advance/retard cam timing. Very useful.

New cam, you can get any sort of grind you want, from mild to scorching hot.

With everything above, you could expect 220 hp.

Holy cow where do I sign?? 220 horses?? I have a hard timing believing 220 hp out of a NA engine. Am I wrong?

Sounds fishy to me. A stock 87 turbo makes ~225. hard to get turbo-level performance without some kind of blower on there, or nitrous or whatever...

it's easy to "get" 200HP if you take the theoretical benefits of each upgrade that you can do to a NA engine, but I don't think when you're done, it will add up the same as it did on paper.

The whole is lesser than the sum of its parts.

I bet there are some NA engines out there that could put out 200HP, but I don't think the cam/gear/new DME/port etc. is going to be worth your time, especially when it breaks every other weekend in some horrible way.

With what was listed above plus an exhaust system, low restiction air intake, higher compression pistons, bored out engine, advanced timing and most of all the other N/A goodies out there(except forced induction) I think 220 may be possible. However, with those mods the car would probably not be very driveable on the street. Cams usually don't add any "overall power" (sometimes they can however, depending on the grind) they can just concentrate the power in certain areas. With a really hot cam(big lift and duration...I think) you can concentrate the power mostly in the last 2000 rpms before redline - great for a racetrack. Included a quality headers, no cat, no muffler exhaust with a ram air intake and ported and polished head you can get some pretty mean flow moving through the engine at high revs. Now 220 rwhp, I really couldn't say for sure, but if you spend enough money im sure you could get near there. Basically what we are talking about is pretty much a race engine. Technically you probably "could" get that power from the engine but with the money it would take, you are better off just buying an turbo, s, s2 968, etc. Not the first one to say that .

Just to clarify, I don't/didn't want to do this, I just found it interesting.

We are experimenting with a NA block to insert into our race car. We hoope for the best, but don't really know, other than rough and quick calculations what the result of our work will be. Basically, we are boring the block to 16mm, dropping in steel sleeves, installing a knife edged 3 liter crank, (about 11lbs lighter than stock), 12.9-1 JE pistons with total seal rings. We are also installing a larger cam. And getting rid of the exhaust thru a side exit setup.

We plan to run the stock motronics and a very slightly modified intake, using the stock airflow meter, it will use an Adjustable FPR and turbo injectors and will run on race gas only.

I'll let you all know what that 4 banger does when we tune it.

Again, we are in the process, and there might be a couple of changes.

Take Care!!
