If you're talking about the plastic panels found on turbos then they bolt on. If you're talking about the physical metal under the doors then they are welded on.

Yep the metal under the doors.
I feared that they are welded on I was told by a body guy that it's a major PITA to replace those because they have to take out the seats and pull up the carpet and such, is this true??

Not sure about that. What's wrong with the ones you have? Mine were beat up pretty badly but 951and944S (Terry) has pulled out all dents and redone the pebble guard. You can't tell that there was ever a half inch deep by seven inch long crease. Another possibility is to attach boxed rockers or 968 style rockers. They may cover any problems. For those you can try:

On the passenger's side the panel is just very ragged looking. I think it needs a new pebble guard(ing).
On the drivers side, it has what sounds similar to yours.. a gash about 3-4 inches in height, 1 inch wide and half an inch deep.. crosses over from the rocker panel to the door. It looks like someone drove a forklift into it or something!
Something like that can be massaged out??

Not sure how well you can see the dent but this it's on the rear of the panel down low. This is when the rock guard was taken off of the car.
This pic is of the barbs that were welded to the body so that you could pull out the dent by gently messaging it.
This pic has the dent pulled out and completely smoothed and primered. It is prior to installation of the rock guard.

My car's not finished yet but I'll throw in a couple of pics of the color and some of the work. If you look closely you'll see at least 12 inches of reflection in the ruler.
Another reflection of the skylights that are about 20 feet above the car. Can you see the white lines? Those are reflections of a half inch PVC pipe that's attacehd to the roof of the building, again 20 foot away.

Whoa shiny!
That dent is similar to mine, except mine is vertical and crosses from the rocker panel up into the door (not sure if that matters?).
Anyway, glad to see I (probably?) won't have to replace those
