Hi Thaddeus
You are nearly there..
I have the strong impression that most electrical problems (grimlins?) specially those who die of starvation if the battery has been disconnected for a while, are caused by corroded contacts. Grounds to be the most likely.
This based on over 30 years of fooling around with VW's, while living in an hostile & corrosive marine environment.
It might be advisable to start cleaning & checking the contacts, replacing them as required.
My grounds now bave stainless bolts with phosphor bronze external teeth serrated lock washers (DIN 6798A) and a bit of vaseline to slow down corrosion. Seem to work well.

May this be changed to:

Good thought, Hans. Actually I spent some little time last night inspecting wires. Tracing them, looking, just poking around... found some bad insulation on some, taped it... I will keep proactively looking, having the car dead for a week for no good reason is a drag.
cheers
