Post Won't start after battery disconnect...

My 1991 944S2 has been stored for a few months and I just recently replaced the cam chain tensioner. When I connected the battery and tried to start the engine, all I get is one loud click from the engine area in front of the windshield. The engine doesn't turn at all. I do see the dash lights on like with a normal start. After one click, I get nothing until I remove the key and try all over.

I tried jump starting it with another running vehicle but got exactly the same behavior.

One other detail is that when I reconnected the battery and locked the vehicle, I got around twenty fast flashes from the lock LED, then one flash about every three seconds. That seems more frequent than before I started this work.

I'm stuck. What would you investigate to fix this?

thanks,

Bryan

You might have a alarm problem but before we go down that road, did you turn the engine over a few time by hand to make sure that the valves and pistons are not running into each other?

Sounds like a very dead battery to me. Fully charge the battery and make sure none of the cells are dead. If the battery is completely flat, it may not crank over on a jump.

Use a wire brush on the terminal comnnections too. Sometimes the contact is good enough for low flow, but not for the starter.

I'd say your battery is toast...

These cars do not like to be jumped and they need a lot of power to crank. Try to slow charge the battery.

Guess I'm with the guys who are saying "battery". I couldn't believe this myself but I had a Nissan 4X4 that was running fine, then the next moment would not start. Tried jumping the battery--nothing. I thought I had other problems until a new battery was suggested. Put it in and BINGO, problem solved. I still am not sure why the battery just died without warning nor do I understand why jumpering it failed. All I know is that I'm glad I didn't start looking at a hundred other things that were OK and thinking the battery was allright.

That was it! The problem was something between slightly dirty terminal connections and a battery that wasn't fully charged. Thanks!

Bryan
