Post Coverlay Dash Cover -- Before & After Photos

Here is a before & after photo of my 944 interior. The top photo respresents what the car looked like when I bought it 6 months ago. The bottom photo was taken a few minutes ago, after making the following changes:

Repair of center console cassette hinge
968 Club Sport steering wheel (black)
Lloyd's Superheavyweight Mats (brown)
Becker CDR-220 stereo & Blaupunkt Speakers
Coverlay Dash Cover (brown)

Regarding the Coverlay.... I was expecting it to SUCK, but have actually been pleasantly surprised by it. Bear in mind that my uncovered dash is truly an abomination. Photos don't do it justice; not only does it contain a LITANY of cracks (some of which resemble mountain crevasses), but it seems to be a magnet for filth in general. If it were a building, it would be declared inhabitable and probably destroyed by the State authorities.

The Coverlay dash cover isn't perfect....but it looks about 97.4% better than the uncovered dash. The color brown is not an exact match (I kinda wish I had gotten black), but it's pretty darn close.

Overall, I am pleased with the Coverlay, at least for the value it represents. Now if only it were covered in leather...

Here's another photo with the Coverlay installed. Note that so far, I have not yet glued the dash cover in place; it's just resting (quite snugly) on top of the dash.

Hmmm... you may have just changed my opinion of buying one of those dash covers. Where did you buy it from?

Thumbs up

Sean; From where I sit I don't understand what all the negative comments about the Coverlay piece were based on,,it looks GREAT,,,a lot better than the dash underneath. The steering wheel is as nice as I've seen.

weird, I didn't know the burgandy dashes cracked. I figured they lasted longer since all the other interior color options had the BLACK top's. I guess I just lucked out

LOoks GREAT! Nice flat finish

Sean,
Just a suggestion if you haven't glued your Coverlay on yet.

Consider taking off the instrument panel trim piece, and, the side vents themselves. If you do so, you'll find that the coverlay will "lay" better. Then you can go back and put back the pieces after its glued in. I thought mine came out better that way IMHO.

newoldguy, thanks for the glueing tip! I have not yet glued on the dash cover. I will probably do so on Sunday.

Actually, my interior is supposedly "Saddle Brown," though it does appear to be burgundy in places. Over the years, sun exposure faded the carpet and some of the cloth material to look burgundy.

Regearding the complaints about Coverlay, I guess that if you have a really nice full leather interior, then maybe you would have issues with Coverlay. But on my car (vinyl/cloth seats, vinyl doors & dash), the dash cover looks pretty close to factory! I was amazed to see the improvement over the old factory dash.

And it was reasonably priced, at least when compared to buying a good used dash. I got mine from Performance Products...they were having a 25% off sale, so it cost about $75 plus shipping (total around $100).

Here's another "before & after" photo.

You can still get a dash cover for 25% off at Performance Products (only colors are black & brown though). Note that you can buy the same item for about the same price at coverlaymfg.com - and COverlay has a 90 day warranty, whereas Performance Products only has a 30-day warranty.

The steering wheel is a factory 968 Club Sport wheel. You can order it from your local dealer... Price? Probably $350-400. I love it. Installation was a breeze, and it really modernizes the interior.

The 968 CS wheel has an embossed Porsche crest. There is an alternative factory wheel, the 930 wheel - it has a cloisonne (metal) crest. It's pretty tough to find the 930 wheel in stock though.

A third alternative is the 930 wheel sold by AJUSA; it appears to be built by the same third party supplier, and it's available for about $300.

I have a black coverlay dash for my 86 and I took it off. mine rattled when it was on maybe I do need to glue it on. I will also try to post some before and after pics of my dash. great Idea about taking the trim off first.
