Default balance shaft pulley

so i'm pulling off the front pulleys to remove everything and i i take notice of balance shaft pulleys. ok there's a key on the shaft. that's all nice and dandy. but on the pulley there's 2 slots....and they're not spaced 180degrees apart. more like 160degrees. when i pulled the pulley off, the shaft key was on the right-side slot if you rotate the pulley so that both slots are on the lower-half of the pulley.

is there a correct and incorrect way? or there's just an additional slot on the pulley....

Yes, there is a wrong way. You'll now need the pics in the mannual to reinstall so the balance shafts line up properly. It's not too dificult to understand, but too lengthy to write here.

You might go here and look-up balance shaft / sprocket installation & alignment . It helped me, just finished the WP/TB/BS job yesterday for first time. The manuals are great, but I've found on the 928's and 944's that Rennlist and ancilliary links are often more practical and clear, especially later work that includes pictures.

There is a right and wrong way. Here is an illustration from the manual. Notice the keyways and alignment marks.

Decided to add some more detail. The three things you need are here on this illustration, the location of the woodruff keys, the aligment marks in relation to the pulleys, and the location of the "O" marks. You will find that once the pulleys are installed on the shaft that the covers can only be installed one way, since one of the slots will be occupied by the woodruff keys. As long at the alignment marks woodruff keys are in the right places, the letters don't matter.

On the upper shaft use the "U" keyway. On the lower use the other keyway, on early cars i believe it was labled "O"

It's really simple if you have are the parts. The metal "cover" at the end of the pulley has a window in it. If you put it back together in one keyway, it shows U (under) and the other way shows O (oben - above). The upper shaft should be keyed for O, the lower from U.

VERY nice illustrations.

As a side note, which might help somebody else someday, I managed to switch-up the tensioners for BS and TB. Carved a nice gash in the back cover. The TB tensioner has a guard lip that runs closer to the block. The BS tensioner has a guard lip that is closest to the radiator. Rookie mistake. Made a hell of a racket.

Also, the TB tensioner had a spacer washer behind it, against the block. I remember seeing it on removal, then not seeing it on the PET shown against the block. So I tried to eliminate it. Didn't work, pulley hit block without it.
