Post Is my motor an 86 or 87 please help

Hey I've finally begun taking my "86" 951 motor that I bought from ElonDooberhead apart and found what looks like a spring tensioner(see pics). Unless I'm mistaken this makes my motor an 87 or later.

Does anyone know how I can find out exactly what year my engine is the #'s that seemed relivant are:
M44/51 upper rear of block
45HO23OO upper rear of block
K1969\3 rear of head
951.104.303.1R front of head
944 116 404 4R upper bellhousing

Also If anyone needs some free shipping from between Harrisburg PA to Atlanta GA let me know I'm driving that path in an empty Explorer.

Thanks for the help,

If it has the tensioner, it is most likely an '86. I have one of the few that was converted to the auto tensioner.

Not sure on the numbers... never really saw a list anywhere of a yearly breakdown on the engines.

I think only the '87+ cars has that tensioner. The '86 only had a roller there that had to be manually adjusted and set with 'the tool'.

Well I'll be a monkies uncle I guess I should have notice that when your e-mail said
"I just pulled my '87 951 motor out of my car and replaced it with a racing engine... im trying to sell it"
jeeez my bad. She looks fine otherwise.
Now I've gotta call Paragon back up and change out some parts 'cause "I candn't wreed"(said in handyman D-minor).

Do you fellas know if my dme/other electronics will work without any modifications(I think they still will but I just want a little reassurance).

Also thanks for the help.

Everything that bolts onto the block is the same across all years of the 951. The 86 had a diffrent block, rods, balance shaft housings and bearings, oil pressure relief valve and bushing, and the tensioner.

H = 1987

This goes for the chassis as well as the engine.

Good deal, I appreciate the help.
Now I have been fortunate enough to come up on my second problem.
I managed to loose one of the washers that goes over the head studs, between the head and the head bolds.(see red arrow in pic)

Is it possible for me to get a new one from a hardware store if so;
Does anyone know the exact dimensions of this washer, what metal it is made of (steel?), and what kind of coating it has on it(zinc?). a.k.a. what to tell a hardware store I need.

ORRR does anyone have one laying around they would ship to me I will gladly pay shipping.

I have plenty of them sitting around....more than 10 944 and 951 cars have gone to heaven from my garage. I can ship one to you if you get the shipping.

Legoland951,
I just looked up shipping prices and it looks like it would cost me 10 bucks to ship it from cali and I still might not get it before fri/sat so I think I might just make the 2 hour drive to the Porsche dealership in Atlanta. I really appreciate the offer though.

You wouldn't happen to know a VW part number for an washer that is the same would you. I would just go down to the hardware store and get a washer that looks pretty close but this guy seems to be a pretty important washer and I would hate to blow the headgasket because a replacement washer didn't have the same stress characteristics.
As always I appreciate the help. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
